FIFA plans to amend the rule about football citizenship. At the moment, players cannot play for a national team if they have played at least one official match for a different national team.
According to the source, the new rule will allow players to change national teams if they have played no more than three times for the first national team, including qualifying games for the tournament before they turn 21 and at least three years before that.
At the same time, it will not be possible to change citizenship for those who took part in the final tournament of the World Cup or the final match of the confederations cup. FIFA is also proposing to allow players to return to their first national team if they have never played for a second team.
The new rule will come into force next month if 211 national federations approve it at the congress on September 18, which FIFA will hold online from Zurich.
