There will be a crucial game in Europe for German side Köln on Thursday, as they look to bounce back from their 2-1 defeat last week. Fehervar hold the advantage ahead of the second leg, and they will be looking for a notable scalp in the Europa Conference League.
Europa Conference League Preview
It has been a fine run in the Europa Conference League for Fehervar this term, and they don’t appear to be content with crashing out at this stage of the competition. They have already made it through the second and third qualifying rounds, but many expected the fixture against Köln to be the end of their run.
However, they produced a memorable performance in Germany last week to give them a 2-1 lead in the tie. Köln went ahead early in front of their home fans, as Florian Dietz opened the scoring after 14 minutes. However, the game changed after a red card for Julian Chabot just six minutes later.
Fehervar seized their chance soon after, and levelled the scores just after the half hour mark through Budu Zivzivadze. The turnaround was complete just eight minutes later, as Palko Dardai fired the travelling side into the lead just five minutes before the break.
Despite having 72% of the ball, Köln rarely threatened to tie the score line, as they managed just a single shot on target after the sending off. However, back at 11vs11, the second leg looks to be a more challenging test for Fehervar this Thursday.
Köln can certainly take inspiration from the defeats that Fehervar has suffered in the Europa Conference League this term, as they have lost once in the four games that they have played. However, that defeat was suffered on the road in the second qualifying round against Gabala.
This will be the second meeting between Köln and Fehervar in European competition. The first meeting was won 2-1 by Fehervar last week. However, Fehervar do boast a very impressive record against German opposition, as they are unbeaten in two fixtures.
Last week’s first leg was an engrossing affair, and this looks to follow suit this week. This could be the fixture where the shock in the Europa Conference playoff round comes, as we could see Fehervar getting at least the draw that they need to progress through to the group stage.
