Union Berlin travel to Köln this weekend, as they look to end their two game run without a win. Meanwhile, the hosts will be looking to get out of a bad run of form themselves, as they haven’t picked up a victory in their last three games.
FC Köln and Union Berlin are two sides in the Bundesliga that are both desperate to bring an end to a baron run of form. Both sides have failed to pick up wins in the Bundesliga over recent weeks, as they have been dropping down the league standings. However, Union still have a very real chance of finishing in a European place despite their dip.
Union are still in the final European spot in the Bundesliga, but have seemingly struggled to cope with the demands of playing in Europe throughout the season to this point. The German side have failed to win their last two, which came after a run of three straight victories.
However, they have still been difficult to beat, and lost for just the second time in the league this season last weekend. That defeat came in a 5-2 loss against Bayern Munich. However, this shouldn’t be nearly as daunting for the visitors.
FC Köln may have thought they would have been safe from a relegation scrap this season, but a recent run of two defeats in three means that there is now just a four point gap between themselves and the drop zone.
Köln were beaten for the second time in three games last weekend, which was also just their third defeat in total this season. Borussia Dortmund were the victors in that fixture, but Köln did lay down a good fight, registering 21 shots in the match.
Union Berlin have a perfect record in this fixture in the Bundesliga. They have won all four previous fixtures between the sides, and have scored twice in all meetings. Köln last beat Union Berlin in the second-tier, as the picked up a 2-1 victory on the road in April 2014.
The history books will certainly be on the side of Union this weekend, as they look for a fifth straight Bundesliga win against Köln. It should be a difficult match for the visitors, but they have the ability to get over the line and take the points back to the capital.
