Two sides that are yet to win in the Bundesliga this season will meet this weekend, but will it be FC Köln or Borussia Monchengladbach that will be able to get a first three points of the campaign?
The early evidence would suggest that this could be a long season ahead for FC Köln. They have lost both of their Bundesliga games so far this season. The hosts will be looking to stop this torrid run to start the season, and ensure that they won’t be getting dragged into a relegation scrap this term. They have conceded four goals in their opening two games, and have only scored on two occasions. Both of those goals came in their opening day defeat against Hoffenheim.
This was followed up with a 1-0 defeat away at newly-promoted Arminia. That would have been a disappointing result for the club, as they dominated possession throughout the match. However, the only moment of magic in the match was produced by Joan Simun Edmundsson, who’s goal with ten minutes remaining gave all three points to the hosts in their first game back in the Bundesliga.
Borussia Monchengladbach haven’t fared much better so far this season, as they also haven’t won a game in the Bundesliga so far. It has been a disappointing start to the season for them, as they will once again be looking to challenge for a place in the Europa League. They opened the season with a 3-0 defeat away from home against Borussia Dortmund. Last time out, they were made to settle for a 1-1 draw against Union Berlin. Marcus Thuram fired Monchengladbach ahead in that game, but they were forced to regret missed chances when Nico Schlotterbeck equalised with ten minutes remaining.
Monchengladbach have won the last two against FC Köln. The most recent success came in March, as they won 2-1. Meanwhile, FC Köln’s last win in this fixture came in January 2018. Monchengladbach have won just once in their last five visits to Köln.
Monchengladbach may have started the season slowly, but they remain a firm contender for a European place this season. We expect them to get their season back on track this weekend with a win away from home against FC Köln. Thuram will once again be among the scorers.
