It was a disappointing return to Bundesliga action for Bayern Munich, and they will be looking to get back on track and restore their lead at the top of the standings with a victory this weekend against the in-form FC Köln.
Bayern Munich have offered a glimmer of hope for the chasing pack in the Bundesliga, as they were beaten on their return to league action last weekend. That defeat coupled with positive results for the teams in the two positions directly below them means that they is a gap of just six points between Bayern and Borussia Dortmund coming into the second half of the season.
Bayern will be keen to prove that last weekends defeat was merely a blip, as they squandered a 1-0 lead before losing against out-of-sorts Borussia Monchengladbach.
That defeat was only the third that Bayern have suffered in the Bundesliga this season, and ended a run of four straight defeats in the league. There is little doubt that Bayern are at their most dangerous when their backs are against the wall, and their ability to get results is called into question.
Fears that FC Köln could be involved in a relegation scrap this season have been wide of the mark, as they look more than capable of challenging for a European place based on the form that they shown in the first half of the campaign.
Köln are currently sitting in sixth place, and will have the added incentive of a place in the top four should they pick up a victory this weekend. They are just two points behind Freiburg at present, and have been in excellent form in recent games. Köln have won each of their last three, including their win on return to action last weekend against Hertha Berlin.
Bayern have a faultless record against Köln in the recent meetings between the sides. The club from Bavaria have won each of their last eight against their rivals this weekend, which includes the 3-2 win that they recorded earlier in the season. The last win for Köln in this fixture came at home in February 2011.
There has been a lot to like about FC Köln this season, but it’s likely that their three-game winning run will come to an end this weekend. Bayern Munich have a strong record against their opponents, and will be keen to bounce back after last weekends disappointment.
