CAF World Cup qualification continues this weekend, as South Africa will be looking to extend their advantage at the top of Group G. They travel to Ethiopia this weekend, as the hosts will also be looking to go top of the group at the half way stage.
There is still everything to play for in Group G in CAF World Cup Qualification, as all four teams can still reach the World Cup finals in Qatar. South Africa holds the narrow advantage after two games have been played, but there is still work to be done.
South Africa will be looking to make it to the World Cup for the first time since their home tournament in 2010, as they missed both the 2014 and 2018 editions of the competition. Their form in the group stage so far has been relatively strong, as they have collected four points from the two games that they have played, and are the only team in Group G not to have lost a game.
They would have been disappointed with their first qualification result, as they were held to a 0-0 draw by Zimbabwe, but they bounced back with a very important win at home against Ghana. Bongokuhle Hlongwane scored the match-winning goal in that game with just seven minutes remaining.
Ethiopia have never previous reached a World Cup, but they would certainly feel that they are in a decent position to end that wait in Group G. They have managed to keep tabs on the two heavyweights in the group after two rounds of fixtures, and a win this weekend could see them go top. They claimed their first win in the group last time out, as Aschalew Tamene Seyoum scored the winner in the 94th minute against Zimbabwe.
Surprisingly, South Africa have never claimed a victory against Ethiopia. The two nations have met on three previous occasions, and Ethiopia have won the last two. Their most recent success came in World Cup qualification in 2013, as they beat South Africa 2-1 at home.
Ethiopia have never lost to South Africa in three previous matches, and have won both of the home games that they have played against their rivals. It’s hard to pick a winner, which means a goalless draw could be a result that both nations will be happy with.
