Real Madrid moved back to the top of the league with a draw in midweek, but they will be looking to win for the second time in five games this weekend when they travel to Elche.
Real Madrid are the current leaders of La Liga, but you wouldn’t have guessed that from the form that they have shown over the last four. They have won just once during this run of games, while they have picked up two draws.
It is enough at present to be the league leaders, but they will need more if they are to win back the La Liga title this season. The confidence that Real would have picked up from their El Clasico victory over Barcelona last weekend was absent in their midweek outing, as they were held back at the Bernabeu by Osasuna.
Credit must certainly be given to the travelling side, who defended excellently throughout the contest, but Real never looked like making the breakthrough despite having 75% of the ball on Wednesday night. They managed just three shots on target, which could have been a missed opportunity given how tight the top of the league is.
Elche have won as many games as Real in their last four, but the two defeats in their last three certainly highlights that avoiding relegation is their chief concern this term. Their second defeat in that run came on Tuesday evening, as Alaves beat them 1-0.
Elche dominated the ball in that game, but were sucker-punched on the counter-attack by their opponents. It is a gameplan that Elche will likely use themselves against Carlo Ancelotti’s side this weekend.
Real Madrid are unbeaten in six previous fixtures against Elche in La Liga. They have won five times in the past, with the only draw between the sides coming in this fixture last season. The recent meetings have been much closer, with Real winning 2-1 in Madrid last season, while the meeting in Elche ended in a 1-1 draw.
Elche have been involved in close games throughout the season, and will be keen to stay defensively strong in this fixture over the weekend. However, Ancelotti’s side should have enough in the final third to get the win, but it will likely only be a 1-0 victory.
