One of the heavy favourites for Africa Cup of Nations glory this year will open their campaign on Sunday, as Egypt look for an opening day win in Group B against Mozambique.
Egypt have had a long time to ponder over their defeat in the previous edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, and they will be looking to go one better in the competition this year. The nation are the commanding favourites to top Group B, and they will be expected to make a winning start to the competition when they come up against Mozambique in Abidjan.
Egypt have won the competition on seven previous occasions, with their latest honour coming in 2010, which was their third straight success on the bounce. They have reached two of the previous three finals at AFCON, but they have suffered defeats in each of their last two final appearances. The nation should be in good confidence coming into the tournament after winning each of their last three internationals. Meanwhile, they have suffered just one defeat in their last eleven.
Mozambique will be looking to upset the odds at the competition this winter, as they made their fifth appearance at the Africa Cup of Nations. However, they are yet to get out of the group stage, and they have failed to win in 12 matches at the tournament proper. Their most recent appearance at AFCON came in 2010.
They are unlikely to win the competition, and they will likely be happy to win one match during the group stage. Consistency has been hard to come by for this national side over the last 12 months, as they have won just five of their last 14 internationals.
Egypt boasts the dominant record in the overall meetings between these sides after winning each of the last five. They have never conceded against Mozambique, and have scored a total of nine goals. Their most recent win was a 1-0 success in June 2013.
This should be one of the most straightforward games in the opening round at AFCON. Egypt look hard to overlook, and we fully expect them to claim victory in this Group B opener by at least a two-goal margin against Mozambique.
