Group J in African World Cup qualification will give one side an excellent chance of reaching the finals for the very first time. Tanzania and DR Congo meet in the first round of games on Thursday afternoon.
DR Congo’s form hasn’t been that strong coming into this very important opening group game of World Cup qualification. They haven’t won in two, with their last victory coming in a 1-0 success against Gambia in the final round of games of Africa Cup of Nations qualification back at the end of March. Since then, they have lost to Tunisia, and were most recently held by Mali in an international friendly. There is a lot that they will need to improve if they are to top Group J. The biggest issue could be defensively, as they have conceded nine goals in their last ten games. Scoring has also been a slight issues, as they have hit the back of the net on just two occasions in their last four games in all competitions.
Tanzania meanwhile are a side certainly going in the right direction. They managed to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations for just the second time in their history in 2019, and their sights will now be set on reaching the World Cup finals for the very first time. They have already overcome a first round tie to reach the group stages, as they beat Burundi on penalties. Tanzania have won their last two games, with victories against Libya and Malawi. Both of these wins have come without conceding a goal, while they have scored three goals in the two victories. They could be potential dark horses to reach the World Cup finals on current form.
Tanzania actually have a very good record against DR Congo, as they have beat their opponents this week on three occasions in six meetings. That includes a victory in the last game between the sides, as they won in an international friendly against DR Congo in 2018. Meanwhile, DR Congo’s last win in this fixture came in 2009.
Tanzania have a very good recent record against DR Congo, and have also been in the better form most recently. For that reason, we could see them getting off to the perfect start in qualification with a win on the road.
