Chile’s hopes of reaching a tenth World Cup finals are in tatters in South American qualification, as they are currently in eighth coming into the eleventh round of fixtures. Paraguay can inflict more damage on their chances with a win on Sunday night, and also improve their own chances.
It hasn’t been the best World Cup qualifying campaign for Chile, as they sit down in eighth place. There is a seven-point gap between themselves and the playoff spot, and a nine point difference between Chile and the automatic qualifying spaces. Their chances of reaching the World Cup are very slim, as just eight games of qualifying remain.
Chile are starring down the barrel of missing a second straight World Cup for the first time since 2006. They failed to reach Russia after reaching the quarterfinals in both the 2010 and 2014 competitions.
Chile have picked up just one win in the ten games that they have played to this point, and have been beaten on five occasions. Chile were well beaten in their last qualifier, as they went down to a 2-0 defeat against Peru on Thursday evening. A dramatic response will be needed if they are to stand any chance of reaching Qatar.
Paraguay stand a much better chance of reaching Qatar, as they are currently in sixth in the standings, and are just two points behind Colombia, who currently occupy the playoff spot. They are unbeaten in three games coming into this fixture, but their only win during that run came against Venezuela.
However, they would have taken confidence from their sixth draw in qualification on Thursday evening, as they played out a stale 0-0 draw against the reigning Copa America champions, Argentina.
The overall record between these nations is tight, as Paraguay have won on 28 previous occasions, while Chile have recorded 27 wins. Paraguay also has a very good recent record against Chile, as they have won their last three against their rivals. Their most recent win came in June, as they won 2-0 away from home.
Chile have quality in their squad, but it certainly isn’t clicking in qualification. The recent record between the nations does indicate that further misery could be poured on Chile in this fixture, and we expect an away win to be the result.
