The side at the top of the Premier League will be looking to reach the last eight of the EFL Cup this week. Chelsea haven’t won the competition since 2015, while Southampton will be looking to go one better from the 2016-17 season where they were beaten finalists.
Two teams that have started the new Premier League season in contrasting form will meet in the round of 16 in the EFL Cup on Tuesday. Chelsea will have home advantage for the second game running, as they look to win the EFL Cup for the first time in six years.
It has been an excellent start to the new season for Chelsea, as they look more than capable of challenging on all fronts this season. The Blues are already at the top of the Premier League standings, and look almost assured of reaching the knockout stages in the Champions League.
A success in the EFL Cup could be towards the bottom of their hopes this season, but it will certainly be a trophy that Thomas Tuchel will be more than happy to win. The Blues narrowly saw off Aston Villa in the last round, as they claimed victory by a 4-3 scoreline on penalties.
Southampton are still looking for a first major trophy since the 1975-76 season when they won the FA Cup. They have made it through to this round of the EFL Cup after seeing off two clubs from the Football League.
It was a dominant win in the second round, as the Saints beat Newport County 8-0 away from home. It was another game on the road in the previous round for Southampton too, as they beat Sheffield United on penalties after a 2-2 draw.
The Saints have beaten Chelsea just three times in the last 21 meetings. Their most recent victory came in December 2019, as they beat the Blues 2-0 at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea have won just once in their last three against the Saints. The last two meetings in cup competitions have come in the FA Cup, with Chelsea progressing in both the 2012-13 and 2017-18 seasons.
Tuchel is likely to make changes to his Chelsea team for this fixture on Tuesday, but there is still guaranteed to be international quality in the line-up. The Saints will make a good game of it, but the hosts should still progress.
