The English sides in European action enter the EFL Cup in the third round, which gets underway this week. Chelsea will battle against Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge for the second time in the space of a couple of weeks, but will the Blues be able to get another win against the side from the West Midlands.
Chelsea will be among the favourites to win every competition that they are in this season, and that includes the EFL Cup. Thomas Tuchel will likely rest a number of first-team stars for this fixture on Wednesday evening, but that doesn’t mean that a talented eleven won’t be on show for this third round tie. Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech will both likely feature, with Romelu Lukaku among the players that will be given a rest. Chelsea continued their strong start to the new Premier League season with another emphatic display in London on Sunday, as the Blues ran riot at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Chelsea picked up a dominant 3-0 success on the road, to win their fifth straight London on the road. Thiago Silva scored the opening goal four minutes into the second half, before maximum points were assured before the hour mark when N’golo Kante scored the second. Antonio Rudiger put the cherry on top of the cake with the third.
Aston Villa got back to winning ways in the league on Saturday, as they also won 3-0. The Villa were very impressive in the last half an hour of that fixture against Everton, and were deserving winners at Villa Park. Matty Cash scored an excellent opening goal for the Villa, before Lucas Digne headed into his own goal after a fine delivery from Leon Bailey. Bailey himself scored the third goal of the game, as he smashed into the Everton goal before being shortly replaced after picking up a slight injury.
This will be the first cup meeting between Villa and Chelsea in over ten years. They last met in a domestic cup competition in the FA Cup in 2010, with Chelsea claiming a 3-0 victory. Villa haven’t won on their last seven visits to Stamford Bridge, which includes their 3-0 defeat earlier this month.
Changes for both sides are very likely, but it still remains hard to look past Chelsea getting the victory to move into the fourth round of the EFL Cup.
