Borussia Dortmund resumed their Bundesliga campaign after the international break with a victory away from home. Given the recent form of Bayern Munich, the title race door could be slight open for Marco Rose’s side, which means that Friday’s match against Freiburg is a huge opportunity to put pressure on the champions.
Borussia Dortmund may be back in the Bundesliga title race, as Bayern Munich slipped to a shock defeat in their first game following the winter break against Borussia Monchengladbach. However, Marco Rose’s side will need to keep picking up victories if they are to chip away at the difference between the two sides, which currently stands at six points.
Before the winter break, Dortmund had won once in four games, but they looked in much better form when returning to the pitch last weekend for the first time since December.
Dortmund managed to pick up a 3-2 victory on the road against the in-form Eintracht Frankfurt, with Mahmoud Dahoud scoring the winning goal with just one minute remaining. Dortmund were 2-0 down at the break in that fixture, but goals from Thorgan Hazard and Jude Bellingham levelled the scores.
This will be another interesting fixture for Dortmund, as Freiburg have been one of the stories of the season in the Bundesliga so far this season. They are currently sitting an unlikely position in fourth, and could move up to third with a win on Friday.
Freiburg had won two of their previous four before the break in play. But, they dropped points on their return to action last weekend, as they could only get a draw against Arminia.
Janik Haberer and Jeong Woo-Yeong scored goals to put Freiburg 2-0 ahead, but they allowed Arminia to steal a point after conceding twice in the final half an hour.
Freiburg actually have a very good recent record against Dortmund, as they have won the last two fixtures. Both wins have been recorded by 2-1 scorelines, but Freiburg haven’t won away at Dortmund in the past ten years. Dortmund have won their last three home games against Freiburg.
Freiburg would have taken confidence from their victory against Dortmund earlier in the season, but will need to be more solid defensively this weekend. However, we can’t see past Dortmund taking a second straight victory to close the gap on Bayern.
