One of the standout fixtures in Serie A this weekend will see two of the sides in the battle for fourth spot clash. Bologna will have the home field advantage, but Roma currently sit above their rivals on goal difference. But, it could be an informative match in the race for a Champions League spot.
Roma and Bologna have both made very encouraging starts to the Serie A season, as they look to achieve a finish in the Champions League spots this term. The visitors currently sit in the desired fourth spot after winning seven of their 15 matches in 2023-24. They come into this fixture in fine form after going five without defeat, winning on three occasions over that period.
Roma were forced to hang on in the closing stages last weekend, as they were reduced to nine men with just five minutes remaining. But, Jose Mourinho was delighted by the efforts of his players, as he considered it to be a point gained rather than two points dropped. But, how they perform without some key stars this weekend will be intriguing.
Bologna have been a slight surprise package this term, as few would have foreseen them playing a key role in the race for a European finish this term. They come into the round in fifth place, and they have impressed in recent weeks after winning two of their last three in the competition.
Bologna were excellent on the road last weekend, as they started quickly to race into a 2-0 lead against Salernitana. Joshua Zikzee scored both goals in the opening 20 minutes, but Bologna were unable to extend their advantage, despite boasting the majority of the possession.
These two sides have played out draws in two of the previous three matches. Both of the fixtures over that period ended 0-0. Low-scoring affairs have been common between these teams, with an average of 0.5 being scored across the last five.
A typically cagey affair between these Italian sides is likely this weekend. However, it may be worth siding with the home side on Sunday, given the suspension issues that Roma will need to contend with on the road. But, a 1-0 victory may be the best result that Bologna could manage.
