Bayern Munich play their first game at the Allianz Arena in 2021-22 this weekend in the Bundesliga. The visitors to Bavaria for the fixture will be FC Köln, who kicked off their season with an opening day victory.
Bayern Munich would have been hoping for a stronger start to the new Bundesliga season, as they look to regain their title. However, they were held on the opening week of the new season by Borussia Monchengladbach. Robert Lewandowski kicked off his season just how he ended the last with another goal, which earned a 1-1 draw on the road. The Pole’s form continued into the German Super Cup, which was played on Tuesday night. He scored goals either side of the break, while a further strike was added by Thomas Muller to seal a 3-1 success. However, Lewandowski has been in the headlines for other reasons at the end of this week, as he has admitted that he is looking for a new challenge. A deal could be hard to strike this close to the deadline, but Bayern would be extremely fearful if they were to lose the striker.
FC Köln come into the second round of fixtures in the lofty position of fourth in the league standings. It was an excellent start to the new season from them, as they look to put their relegation troubles from last season firmly behind them. They claimed a deserved 3-1 victory in their first game of the season against Hertha Berlin. Köln went 1-0 down after just five minutes in that game, but a brace from Florian Kainz, and one for Anthony Modeste turned the game in their favour in a ten-minute spell either side of half time.
Köln have beaten Bayern on just three occasions in their history. The most recent victory that they recorded was in a pre-season friendly just over a month ago. However, their last competitive victory against the Bavarians was recorded back in February 2011. Since that victory, Bayern have picked up wins in 13 of the 14 fixtures between the sides.
FC Köln started the new season very well, but this will be a bigger challenge. Bayern will be boosted by being back at home, and the form of Lewandowski is extremely promising for the 2021-22 season. It should be a home success.
