Barcelona could have a challenge on their hands to finish in a European place this season, let alone qualify for the Champions League. The Catalonian giants come into this fixture at the Nou Camp 17 points off the top of the league.
Xavi Hernandez hasn’t had the direct impact that he would have been hoping for when he arrived at Barcelona, as the Catalonian giants are now further off the top of the table than they were after Ronald Koeman’s last game in charge. Barcelona’s aim for the season will be consolidate some respect in their finish, but that may not be enough for them to finish in a top four spot.
It could be a disappointing season for Barcelona if they miss out on a Champions League place this season, but they need to rebuild the club from top to bottom. Barcelona haven’t won in their last two games in the league, and have picked up just one point from those two games. They were held in their last fixture against Osasuna. Nico Gonzalez and Abde Essalzouli scored in that draw for the Catalonians.
Elche are the visitors to the Nou Camp this weekend, as they look for just a second win in six league fixtures. There is a small gap between themselves and the relegation places at present, as they have just a two-point advantage over Cadiz at this stage of the season. That means defeat this weekend could see them drop into the bottom three places of the league standings.
Elche lost on their last outing in La Liga, as they were beaten 2-1 on the road by Valencia. The hosts scored the winner four minutes from time in that game, which was pretty harsh on Elche as they deserved to take at least a point away from the game.
Barcelona have won seven of the previous eight matches that they have played against Elche. The only draw that has come between the two sides came in May 2014, as Elche held on to a 0-0 draw at home. Barcelona won both meetings last season without conceding a goal.
Barcelona should have far too much quality for Elche this weekend. Despite their disappointing form this season, we expect Xavi to get a much-needed home victory before Christmas this weekend.
