The second round of the Ligue 2 playoffs take place on Friday, as Auxerre and Sochaux will be looking to earn their spot in the final in the hope of achieving promotion to Ligue 1.
Tensions will be high in Auxerre on Friday evening, as the side that finished third in the Ligue 2 standings will be looking to reach the final of the promotion playoffs in France. However, Sochaux have already shown that they can deal the pressure of the playoffs, as they eliminated Paris FC in the first round.
Sochaux were the outsiders to get promoted this season, but they are now potentially just two wins away from playing their football in Ligue 1 next season. It was a dramatic playoff tie for Sochaux earlier in the week, as Maxime Do Couto scored in the 92nd minute to book their spot in the final.
Paris FC had taken the lead in the game through Mahame Siby, but the game changed after the sending off for Moustapha Name in the 43rd minute. Sochaux went into the break level, as Steve Ambri levelled the scores, before the winner was scored with virtually the last kick of the game.
Auxerre will still be expected to reach the playoff final this season, as they enjoyed an excellent regular season, as they finished third. They narrowly missed out on automatic promotion in Ligue 2, as they finished a point behind Ajaccio.
Auxerre ended the season in fine fashion, as they won four of their last five fixtures. That includes the three successive wins that they achieved to end the campaign. Their win on the final day was a 2-1 success against Amiens, with Gauthier Hein and Gaetan Charbonnier scoring the goals in the slender win.
Auxerre are unbeaten in their previous four fixtures against Sochaux. They picked up a dramatic 3-2 win against their rivals earlier in the season. However, Sochaux did win this fixture last season, as they picked up a 2-0 win in August 2020. But, that remains their only win in their last five fixtures against Auxerre.
Sochaux did excellently to qualify for the playoffs. However, this could be the time where their campaign comes to an end, as Auxerre boast the superior players, and have been in better recent form.
