Real Madrid are making Atletico Madrid fight for the league title this season, and victory this weekend would see the battle for the La Liga crown go down to the final day of the season.
Real Madrid will need to win both remaining games of the season to have any chance of reclaiming their league title. However, the pressure on the final two matchdays of the season is firmly on Atletico, as a slip up from them would allow Real the chance to pounce. The pressure certainly looked to be off Zinedine Zidane’s side in midweek, as they picked up a comfortable 4-1 victory on the road against Granada.
Madrid went ahead early through Luka Modric, before Rodrygo doubled the lead on the stroke of half-time. Alvaro Odriozola and Karim Benzema added further goals after Granada had pulled one back. Madrid certainly face the tougher fixtures to close the season, but there is still a feeling due to the unpredictability in Spain this season that two wins to finish the season could be enough to get Real’s noses ahead.
Bilbao won’t be just making up the numbers this weekend though, as they will be looking to give a good account of themselves despite having very little to play for. Bilbao are going to finish the season outside the European places, but may still be targeting a finish in eighth. That would seem unlikely, as they are four points behind Celta Vigo. However, they would also be keen to end the season in the top half of the standings. They are currently just three points clear of 12th-place Cadiz, which means that they could drop down the standings with defeat this weekend. Bilbao lost their last La Liga fixture against Huesca, but that was their first defeat in six.
Bilbao’s Super Cup victory in January was the first time that they had beaten Real Madrid in any competition since March 2014. Since their last league win, Real have won seven of the previous eleven fixtures between the Spanish sides.
Bilbao’s recent defeat ended their good run of form, but they have still been strong at home. However, the preferred selection for this game is for Real, as they look to take the title race to the final day of the season.
