Two Italian sides that have started the new season in decent form will both be looking for a second win in three games when they meet this weekend. A win for either side could be enough to see them end this round of fixtures in the European places.
Atalanta have started slightly stronger than Fiorentina coming into this fixture, as they have picked up four points from the two games that they have played to date. Their only win of the season so far came on the opening day of the season, as they beat Torino away from home. It was an exciting finish to that game, as Atalanta stole the points in the 93rd minute, as Roberto Piccoli netted the winner. Luis Muriel scored the first goal in the game after just six minutes, but Atalanta were pegged back in the final ten. They weren’t able to make it a second win on the bounce in their following game, as they were held in their first home match of the new season by Bologna. Atalanta were by far the better team on that occasion, but managed just three shots on target despite having 60% of the possession.
Fiorentina’s wait for a first league win of the season came before the international break, as they claimed maximum points against Torino. They were given a scare in the final minutes of the game, as Torino netted a late consolation. However, goals from Nicolas Gonzalez and Dusan Vlahovic either side of half time were the decisive moments in the game that gave them the comfort that they needed. That first win of the season came just a week after they were beaten on the opening weekend by Jose Mourinho’s Roma.
Atalanta have a fine recent record against Fiorentina, as they have won each of the last three matches, and four of the previous five. They have scored at least three goals in both of the last two matches, which includes in the 3-2 victory that they achieved against Fiorentina last season.
Both Fiorentina and Atalanta will be confident of getting the points that they need to climb up the table in this fixture. However, given the recent record between these two Italian sides, we will give the preference to the hosts this weekend.
