There will be a massive top of the table clash in Serie A this weekend, as third-place Roma welcome second-place Inter Milan.
It has been an brilliant start to the season for both of the sides involved in this fixture at the weekend, and a win for either team could see them emerge as the leading contenders for AC Milan this season. Roma have surprised many people this term, as they have started strongly and currently sit in third place in the league standings. They have won ten of their 16 games this term, and have lost on just three occasions. Their form over recent weeks has been excellent, as they have won their last three league matches. The most recent win that they have achieved came in midweek as they beat Crotone 3-1 away from home. Roma were dominant in recording that win, and took firm control of the game in the opening half by scoring all three of their goals. Borja Mayoral scored a brace, before Henrikh Mkhitaryan made sure of the three points when he converted his penalty in the 35th minute.
It already looks as though Inter will be the team to push AC Milan this season, as they sit just one point behind the current leaders coming into this round of fixtures. Inter have lost just twice this season, and no side has scored more goals than Antonio Conte’s side. However, there will be a need for them to bounce back to winning ways in this game, as they were surprisingly beaten last time out by Sampdoria. Inter registered 24 shots on goal in the defeat, with their only goal being scored in the 65th minute by Stefan de Vrij.
The recent head to head record between these sides is dominated by draws. The last five meetings have ended in that result, with the most recent fixture between Roma and Inter ending in a 2-2- result last season. Inter’s last win against Roma came in 2017.
Inter’s away win in 2017 is the only time that they have won away as AS Roma since 2008, which highlights the challenge ahead for Conte. It will be difficult to separate these sides, which could mean that a draw will be a result that both teams will be happy with.
