Arsenal vs Sunderland Prediction: EFL Match on 21.12.2021

Only eight teams are left standing in the EFL Cup this season, as the first domestic cup up for grabs in England reach their final stages over the next month. League One Sunderland have a huge challenge on their hands this week, as they travel to the Emirates to take on Arsenal.

EFL Cup Preview

Arsenal will be looking to avoid a huge shock on the EFL Cup this week, as they welcome League One giants Sunderland to the Emirates. Football League sides have fared slightly well in this competition in the last ten years, as many will remember Bradford City’s memorable run to the final in the 2012-13 season before being beaten by Swansea in the EFL Cup final.

Many will recall that Bradford saw off Arsenal in that run to the final, and Sunderland will be looking to do exactly the same. The Black Cats have endured a difficult few years, as they were relegated in successive seasons, before failing to make it out of League One in the last two seasons.

Sunderland have seen off two Championship clubs on their route to this point, including Queens Park Rangers in the previous round. However, they are yet to beat a Premier League side since their relegation to League One.

Arsenal play at home in the EFL Cup for the third successive round this week, having already seen off AFC Wimbledon and Leeds United in the last two rounds. The Gunners have looked assured in the competition so far, as they also picked up a huge 6-0 win over Championship promotion contenders West Bromwich Albion.

Mikel Arteta will see a piece of silverware as a huge success for his side this season, and the EFL Cup could present their best chance of winning a trophy in the 2021-22 season.

Arsenal vs Sunderland Head to Head

This is the first meeting between the sides since the 2016-17 Premier League season, where the Gunners did the double. Sunderland have gone eleven without a win against the Gunners, with their last victory coming in the FA Cup in 2012. You have to go back to a League Cup tie in November 2002 for Sunderland’s last win away from home against the Gunners.

Arsenal vs Sunderland Prediction

It looks hard to see past any other result that a win for the Gunners in this quarterfinal clash. Arsenal are likely to make changes, but they should still have far too much for the Black Cats.
