It’s the biggest game of the weekend in Italy as followers prepare for the upcoming Milan Derby. Not only will this be a renewal of one of the sport’s most famous fixtures it also doubles as a battle for the Italian title. The winner of this game will take a huge step towards lifting the trophy which ramps up the pressure on both sets of players. Expect 90 minutes of high drama.
The most recent Milan derby produced a 2-1 victory for Inter last month when the pair met in the Coppa Italia. Interestingly, the two most recent games ended in a 2-1 win for either side and it’s also worth noting both teams have scored in each of the last three. Are we set for another goal-fest? Armchair fans certainly hope so.
AC Milan have home advantage but know this is a game they need to win as they enter second in the table, one point behind their opponents. Victory here would send them shooting to the summit of Serie A with the clock running down on the season. They have won 15 games and drawn four so far, losing the other three. Despite their strong form, we note AC have lost two of their last four league starts. Is their challenge beginning to unravel?
They were beaten 2-0 away to Spezia last weekend in what was a shock result for all, perhaps even supporters of the winning team. Maggiore broke the deadlock early in the second half before Bastoni added a second with 67 minutes on the clock. A blow for AC Milan and one they must bounce back from at the first time of asking.
Inter Milan sit proudly atop the division with their stats for the campaign so far showing 15 wins and five draws against two defeats. The pacesetters have found the net 54 times and conceded only 24. The 50 points gained is one better than AC Milan and seven more than Roma in third place. The title race is fast becoming a battle between the Milan sides. Last season’s champions Juventus can’t be written off, but they are eight behind.
Unlike their opponents, Inter Milan arrive in great form and have won each of their last three, taking 13 of the last 15 points available to them. Now they have their noses in front it will be difficult to shift them. Inter were last seen beating Lazio 3-1 a week ago with the goals coming from Martinez and a Lukaku double.
In any season this is a derby match football fans look forward to but the fact both teams are involved in the race for the title makes it even more exciting. The winning team will finish the weekend top of the league and strong favourites to stay there.
AC Milan are 4.14 with Inter Milan 2.61 and the draw 2.22.
