Serie A history
2025
Napoli
Clinched the Scudetto on the final matchday in Antonio Conte's first season in charge, edging out Inter in a tense title race
2024
Inter Milan
Sealed the title early by beating rivals AC Milan in the Derby della Madonnina, earning the club its 'Seconda Stella' for a 20th league title
2023
Napoli
Ended a 33-year wait for the Scudetto, romping to the title under Luciano Spalletti with Victor Osimhen and Kvicha Kvaratskhelia leading the way
2022
AC Milan
Won on the final day of the season to claim their first title in 11 years, pipping city rivals Inter by two points
2021
Inter Milan
Ended Juventus's run of consecutive Scudetti under Antonio Conte, their first title since the 2010 treble-winning side
2020
Juventus
Their ninth consecutive Serie A title, a run unmatched in Italian top-flight history, completed after the COVID-19 restart
Most points in a season
Juventus set the Serie A record with 102 points in the 2013-14 season under the modern three-points-for-a-win system.
Most goals in a season by one player
Gonzalo Higuain scored 36 goals for Napoli in the 2015-16 season, breaking Gunnar Nordahl's 66-year-old Serie A single-season scoring record of 35.
Longest unbeaten run
Juventus went a Serie A-record 49 league matches unbeaten across the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons under Antonio Conte, part of the team known as 'The Invincibles.'
20 clubs, 38 rounds
Serie A features 20 clubs playing a 38-match round-robin (home and away) from August to May, the same basic structure used since the league expanded to its current size.
No relegation playoff
The bottom three teams are relegated straight to Serie B with no play-off safety net, unlike some other major European leagues that give struggling clubs a reprieve match.
A bonus Champions League spot
Serie A normally sends its top four clubs to the Champions League, but for 2024-25 Italy was awarded an extra fifth berth after topping UEFA's country coefficient rankings under the newly expanded 'Swiss model' format.
Only three points since 1994
Serie A didn't switch from two points to three points for a win until the 1994-95 season, meaning legendary older teams' points totals aren't directly comparable to modern records like Juventus's 102-point haul.
The Scudetto and its sponsor
The league is commercially branded 'Serie A TIM' after telecom sponsor TIM, and the reigning champion wears a small tricolor shield badge called the 'scudetto' on its shirt the following season, a tradition dating back to the 1920s.
