20 clubs, 380 matches

The league consists of 20 clubs who each play every other team home and away, producing 380 matches across a season.

Relegation and the playoff decider

The bottom three clubs are relegated to the Championship, while only two of the three promoted clubs come up automatically - the third spot is decided by a playoff between the teams finishing 3rd to 6th, a match often nicknamed the 'richest game in football' because of the value of Premier League promotion.

European slots can shift

Normally the top four qualify for the Champions League, 5th for the Europa League, and 6th (or 7th, depending on where FA Cup and League Cup winners finish) for the Conference League, but England's exact allocation can change based on UEFA coefficient rankings and prior-season European winners.

Goal difference before head-to-head

Unlike many European leagues, Premier League ties on points are broken first by goal difference and then goals scored, with head-to-head results only used as a later tiebreaker - and in theory a title, relegation or European-qualification deadlock could even be settled by a one-off playoff match.

No title sponsor since 2016

Although the competition was long known by sponsor names such as the 'FA Carling Premiership' and the 'Barclays Premier League', since the 2016-17 season it has dropped a title sponsor entirely and is officially just the 'Premier League'.
