Wolves vs Bournemouth Preview

Wolves

The pressure has eased on Gary O’Neil in recent weeks ahead of the coach welcoming his former club to Molineux on Saturday. Wolves come into this round after winning each of their last two, and avoiding defeat in their previous three.

The preferred 3-4-2-1 formation has worked to great effect in recent weeks, with O’Neil getting the best out of stars such as Rayan Aït-Nouri and Matheus Cunha.

Their attacking players have shone in recent weeks, meaning that their xG of 11.06 is now being outperformed after netting 18 goals from open play.

Defensively, there are still questions to answer after conceding 19 goals from an xGA of 16.01. But, it has only helped O’Neil that he has been able to field the same players in recent weeks. Sam Johnstone is back in training, but José Sá will likely keep hold of the number one jersey.

Bournemouth

Andoni Iraola has seen his side’s form drop off since beating Man City to move within striking distance of the European spots. Since that home win on November 2, the Cherries have suffered defeats in their last two matches.

Still, their performance levels have impressed, with Iraola’s pacey approach and 4-2-3-1 formation offering the perfect blend of protection for the back four and offensive output.

However, it could be argued that the Cherries have still been wasteful in the final third, and that arguably cost them a point against Brighton last weekend.

Bournemouth have accumulated an xG of 17.45 this season, but they have scored just eleven goals. Their chances this weekend are likely to be hindered by the absence of suspended Antoine Semenyo, but Marcus Tavernier looks a ready-made replacement for the winger.

Wolves vs Bournemouth Prediction

  • Pick: The draw
  • Odds: 3.68 (22Bet)
  • Score prediction: Wolves 1-1 Bournemouth

Tactically this is a really interesting clash in the Premier League, and it makes it challenging to make a Wolves vs Bournemouth prediction.

The home side will likely allow Bournemouth to dominate the ball, but it could be argued that the Cherries are usually at their best when they are operated as a counter-attacking side. Semenyo’s absence was felt in the final third last weekend, and the Cherries have won just three of their last 16 on the road.

However, the sheer number of chances that they create means that they look like a good bet to score. Meanwhile, Wolves have netted at least once in each of their last eleven, meaning that the draw could be a solid angle.

Wolves vs Bournemouth Prediction, Betting Tip

  • Pick: Matheus Cunha to Score
  • Odds: 2.8 (22Bet)

In my opinion, Matheus Cunha is on his way to a big move in either the winter or summer window. His stats this season have been incredible for a side with little spark in the final third, netting seven from an xG of 3.3, and recording three assists for good measure.

The Brazilian could once again prove to be the most important player for the home side in the final third on Saturday.

Alternatively, Bournemouth rank as the side with the fourth-highest average of cards per game in the Premier League. Therefore, it could be worth siding with Lewis Cook picking up a booking. The defensive midfielder concedes an average of 2.3 fouls per match, and has already been booked on four occasions in 12 appearances this season.
