RB Leipzig have held a stronghold on the DFB Pokal in recent seasons by winning each of the previous two competitions. However, they will face a challenging assignment if they are to make it through to the next round this week, as they come up against an improving Wolfsburg side.
RB Leipzig have typically been a side that have saved their best performances for the DFB Pokal in recent seasons, as they have been crowned champions in each of the previous two seasons. Their record in the competition has been staggering since the start of 2018, as they have reached the final in four of the five seasons that the DFB Pokal has been competed.
They should come into this fixture in excellent confidence after recently landing a staggering 6-0 win in the Bundesliga to move up to fifth in the standings. They were also excellent in the opening round of the competition at the end of September, as they battled to a 3-2 win on the road against Wehen Wiesbaden. Benjamin Sesko was a standout player on that evening, as he netted twice.
Wolfsburg have made a pleasing start to the new season, as they currently sit ninth in the Bundesliga standings. However, they have often come up short in this competition, having landed just one previous win in the DFB Pokal. Their only other appearance in the final ended in defeat in 1994-95.
The German side will be looking to bounce back on Tuesday after suffering three defeats on the bounce, with their most recent loss coming against Augsburg in the Bundesliga. However, they were excellent 6-0 winners in the opening round of the competition against Makkabi, Tiago Tomas netted a brace in that win in early August.
Leipzig have dominated the previous encounters between these sides after winning each of the previous three without conceding a goal. They have also won four of the five meetings between the sides in the DFB Pokal, which includes a 2-0 success in March 2021.
Leipzig’s record in this competition is staggering across the last five seasons. We expect them to be a major player once again this term, meaning that we would be surprised if they are eliminated in the second round on Tuesday against Wolfsburg.
