West Ham made waves in the summer transfer market, positioning themselves as serious contenders for a top-7 finish in the Premier League.
However, during the pre-season matches, it quickly became clear that appointing Julen Lopetegui as the new head coach was a big mistake. Lopetegui has failed to improve the team’s defensive performance compared to last season, and the attack has shown a lack of creativity, relying heavily on the strikers’ skills.
Throughout the season, the Hammers have often appeared defensively porous, allowing opponents to create chances and score with ease. Lopetegui has struggled to find a balance in the team’s play, failing to build effective positional attacks. As a result, the team has proven highly vulnerable during transitions from attack to defense.
Despite the poor quality of their performances and negative results, West Ham’s owners have retained faith in the Spanish coach. They seem to be hoping for a turnaround, although the team currently looks unpromising.
West Ham secured three wins in the first ten matches of the season. However, defeating Ipswich on their home ground offers little reason to celebrate. Their victories over struggling sides like Crystal Palace and Manchester United were fortunate, as the opponents created numerous chances that were surprisingly wasted.
In the first half against Manchester United, West Ham could have conceded 3 to 4 goals, but remarkably, the Red Devils failed to capitalize on their chances. Lopetegui’s team only managed to score two goals in the second half, benefiting from defensive errors by their opponents.
Despite the team’s low quality of play, West Ham sits 14th in the EPL table, with no immediate threat of relegation. However, Hammers’ fans must be disappointed, as their club had the potential to contend for a top-7 finish.
Everton steadily climbed the Premier League table over the past six matches. The Toffees have conceded only four goals during this period, a vast improvement from the 13 goals allowed in their first four matches.
Much of this change can be attributed to Everton’s gradual adaptation to the departure of Amadou Onana, who left in the summer. Early on, their midfield featured Tim Iroegbunam and Idrissa Gueye, who made numerous positional errors.
However, once manager Sean Dyche replaced Iroegbunam with Orel Mangala or Abdoulaye Doucouré, the situation improved notably. Everton started allowing fewer chances and conceding fewer goals.
Nonetheless, the right flank of defense remains a sore spot, particularly due to the underwhelming performance of 39-year-old Ashley Young.
In terms of attack, Everton have struggled to consistently create dangerous opportunities in every match. However, Iliman Ndiaye and Dwight McNeil have been instrumental in progressing the ball and are the main contributors of threatening shots on goal. If Dominic Calvert-Lewin sharper in front of goal, Everton might find themselves further up the league table.
In the previous match against Southampton, which ended in a 0-1 defeat for Everton, Sean Dyche’s team actually created more chances and deserved at least a draw, if not for their poor finishing.
Bet hereWest Ham have a talented squad with several attacking players who can secure a victory against Everton. However, their level of organization is significantly lower than that of Everton.
Therefore, it is reasonable to expect that Everton will at least avoid defeat and take advantage of West Ham’s shaky defensive structure.
West Ham performed poorly in the first half but played much better in the second half during their recent home victories against Ipswich and Manchester United. This trend may continue in their upcoming match.
Everton is likely to organize themselves defensively in the first half and respond with dangerous counterattacks against their opponent.
