Girona will be looking to continue their memorable campaign in La Liga this weekend, as a victory on the road against Valencia could put them on course to finish second in the standings.
Girona have surpassed all expectations this term in La Liga, as they have already achieved a Champions League finish. However, they will be looking to continue their excellent campaign by finishing as high as possible in the standings, and they remain in the race to finish as the runners-up behind Real Madrid.
The Spanish club come into the penultimate round of matches sitting third in the table, but only victories in their final two matches will give them the opportunity to finish second. They could also lose their spot in third, as Atletico sit just two points behind Girona coming into this round. The visitors will also need to bounce back to form after going two without a victory, which includes a defeat in their previous midweek outing against Villarreal.
It has been a slightly more relaxed season for Valencia in La Liga this term, as they haven’t needed to contend with the threat of relegation throughout 2023-24. The Spanish side comes into this final home match of the season sitting in ninth, but they could yet end the campaign in eighth with victories in each of their final two matches, should results go in their favour.
However, their form on the field has dipped in recent weeks, as they have gone four without a victory. Across that period, they have also suffered three defeats. But, they did show signs of recovery in their previous outing after playing out a draw against Rayo Vallecano.
Girona have achieved success in their recent outings against Valencia after winning each of their previous two. That includes a 2-1 success in the reverse showdown earlier this season. However, Valencia claimed a 1-0 win in their last home match against Girona. The visitors haven’t landed maximum points in this fixture since a 1-0 win in November 2018.
It’s fairly challenging to make much of a case for Valencia this weekend based on their recent performance levels. Meanwhile, Girona also appear to have run out of steam at this late stage. Therefore, an interesting angle for betting purposes on Sunday could be the draw.
