USA vs Switzerland Preview and Team News

USA Team News

The USA take on Switzerland in a friendly on Wednesday. The home team, known to be highly aggressive when they have the ball, also have the smarts to fall back and defend when they lose it. Despite having recently lost 1-2 to Turkey, Mauricio Pochettino’s men will aim to bounce back in this encounter.

Manager Pochettino, formerly of Tottenham Hotspur, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea, likes to be organised at the back, and does this with his USA team as well.

However, he also pays enough attention to attack, and gives the likes of Wright and Agyemang the freedom to roam in the attacking third. He creates layoffs for other attackers and finds chances even from outside the box if a good position is available.

However, Pochettino reiterates that his midfielders must help his defenders out in times of need. This is what makes this USA team such a dangerous proposition, especially at home.

The U.S. squad, ranked 16th by FIFA, will have to make do without the services of DeJuan Jones, Sean Zawadzki and Zack Steffen in this game due to injuries. Christian Pulisic (formerly of Chelsea) has requested time off after a long season with AC Milan.

Switzerland Team News

Managed by Murat Yakin, Switzerland are currently 20th in the FIFA standings. The visiting side are known for their expansive style of building up play and creating interceptions in midfield whenever their opponents try to push ahead. A 4-2 win in their previous game against Mexico will go a long way in cementing their confidence.

There have been enough recent instances that show this Swiss squad are capable of taking on teams ranked higher than them. Wednesday’s match agains USA should be no different.

Switzerland like to use their wings as it gives them the advantage of pushing forward in empty spaces in the opposition’s fullback-marked areas. However, in this game, Yakin will be without the services of Aurele Amenda. He sustained a knee injury and is only expected to return early next month.

Ruben Vargas has picked up a hamstring injury, while Inter Milan goalkeeper Yann Sommer has retired from international football. Nonetheless, Switzerland’s balanced possession-based style of play should make them comfortable enough to take on any questions asked of them by the hosts.

In times of distress, the Swiss central midfielders, led by Granit Xhaka create interceptions and make spaces for a transition to take place in which their attackers get fed well-weighted balls. These passes can then be turned into attacking chances in front of the goal.

USA vs Switzerland Prediction

  • Pick: USA to win or draw
  • Odds: 1.522 (22Bet)
  • Score prediction: USA 1-1 Switzerland

We anticipate this game being either won or drawn by the hosts. The Swiss team could capitalise on errors made by their hosts, but should stay strict with their discipline. In the last two matches recorded between the two sides, the USA were unbeaten in one while Switzerland won the other.

However, a lot of water has passed under the bridge since then, and the home squad, under Pochettino, seem to be one of the teams to beat in North America. Their newly-embraced attacking outlook has made them seem dangerous, especially when they get pockets of space in the final third.

The same will be expected on Wednesday, boosted by the fact that they are playing in front of their fans. The USA can also overload one side of their attack to distract the Swiss defenders and force them into making mistakes and playing bad back passes.

USA vs Switzerland Prediction, Betting Tip

  • Pick: Both teams to score
  • Odds: 1.68 (22Bet)

Both teams have a lot of top attackers in their ranks, and we expect them to get onto the scoresheet. We believe that the Swiss defence may be tougher for the USA to breach, given the former’s keen attention to detail and organised structure.

Most importantly, the visiting defenders do not fall prey to loose balls sent their way by opposition midfielders and retain their discipline while keeping their shape. However, we foresee the likes of Wright, Cardoso, and Agyemang breaching Switzerland’s defence in this encounter.

On the other hand, the Swiss may capitalise on mistakes made by the hosts, especially when they leave empty spaces in their defence while pushing forward. While the USA have scored in four out of their last five meetings, the guests have done so in all of their previous five.
