There was a lot of criticism toward Mauricio Pochettino’s squad selection for the 2025 Gold Cup, as the USMNT didn’t feature some of their best players. The Argentinean tactician opted to give some much-needed rest to Christian Pulisic, Weston McKinnie, Giovanni Reyna and others while testing what other players would bring to the table. 

It’s safe to say that the experiment worked beautifully for the former Tottenham and PSG manager. They finished the group stage in first place in Group D with nine points.

The “Stars and Stripes” scored eight goals and conceded just once in their three group-stage matches. They put five past Trinidad & Tobago and one against Saudi Arabia before closing things out with a 2-1 win over Haiti. However, they should’ve scored at least a few more goals in their last two games and have consistently dominated their opponents on both ends of the pitch. 

Advanced metrics indicate the Americans have accumulated a 6.93 xG over their three group-stage events while limiting opponents to a combined 0.98. That’s perhaps the best evidence of how dominant they’ve looked, albeit against inferior opponents.

Pochettino has stayed true to his convictions and hasn’t experimented too much. He’s rarely made drastic changes to the starting lineup and uses the same 4-2-3-1 tactic fielded since taking over the USMNT role.

Don’t expect that approach to change now. Pochettino is looking to find viable alternatives for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup. So far, the team are passing the test with flying colours.

Costa Rica weren’t nearly as dominant as the USA in the group stage, but they showed the ability to compete with tougher rivals while winning against the opponents they should beat on any given day. 

They finished the group stage undefeated with seven points out of three meetings. The inferior goal differential they posted compared to Mexico was the only reason they couldn’t finish first in Group A.

Los Ticos opened their campaign with a harder-than-expected win over Suriname by a 4-3 score. They followed that up with a 2-1 win against the Dominican Republic, clinching their berth in the quarterfinals before facing Mexico. 

Costa Rica escaped with a scoreless draw against “El Tri”, but their worst goal differential compared to Mexico forced them to finish in second place. They only have themselves to blame, though. They conceded two goals against a Suriname side in the 137th place of the FIFA Ranking, while the Dominicans are 139th.

Miguel Herrera’s men should have won these games easily, but they didn’t. A quarterfinal matchup against USA is their punishment.

38-year-old Keylor Navas, the former Real Madrid and Nottingham Forest goalkeeper, will probably be relied on to pull the upset against the hosts. But don’t be surprised if this is Costa Rica’s final stop in this tournament. Results aside, their play hasn’t shown enough to believe they deserve to get past a USA team that’s firing on all cylinders. 

Despite being undefeated, Costa Rica struggled badly against Mexico and failed to impress in their two wins against lesser rivals.

This will be the toughest opponent the USMNT will face to date in the 2025 Gold Cup campaign. But they shouldn’t have too many problems securing the victory and moving to the semifinals. 

They may have to work hard to break down Herrera’s five-man defensive unit, and it’s always a challenge to score against Navas, but the American side are superior to Costa Rica. A statement backed up by the level of play both teams have shown so far in this tournament.

Even though USA should be considered the overwhelming favourite for this match, they’re not expected to score many goals. After all, they failed to score more than twice in two of their three games so far. Also, Costa Rica are a step-up defensively compared to the likes of Haiti and Saudi Arabia.
