The race for a Champions League finish in the Premier League continues across the penultimate round of matches. Tottenham will be aware that only a victory will keep them in contention, while Burnley will also face pressure this weekend, as their relegation to the second tier could be confirmed.
It has been a mixed period in the Premier League for Tottenham since the turn of the year, as Spurs have seen their form drop off in recent weeks. The North London side comes into this round of matches sitting fifth in the standings, and they currently trail Aston Villa by seven points. However, their game in hand over their Midlands rivals could yet prove crucial.
Burnley’s relegation back to the Championship could be made official this weekend, as they sit five points behind Nottingham Forest with just one match remaining after this weekend. The Clarets would have been bitterly disappointed to see their solid recent form ended in their previous outing after being thumped at home against Newcastle United.
Tottenham boasts an excellent record against teams starting the day in the bottom three after losing just once in their last 22. However, it could be worth noting that their most recent defeat was suffered against Burnley in February 2022. Spurs have also suffered defeats in their last four, and Ange Postecoglou could become the first Tottenham boss to suffer five successive league defeats since February 1994.
Burnley have been relegated from the Premier League on three previous occasions, and their record against teams in the top five positions doesn’t ease their fears. They have lost all seven matches against teams in the top five this season, scoring on just seven occasions.
Tottenham have picked up victories in seven of their last eight home matches against Burnley, with each of the last four ending in wins without conceding. The Clarets are winless on their last ten trips to North London since landing a 3-2 success at White Hart Lane in 1974.
The pressure will be on Spurs this weekend, as they must claim a home win to keep alive their hopes of a Champions League finish. We expect them to claim maximum points on Saturday, but we could also see both teams finding the net at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
