Switzerland vs Norway Preview and Team News

Switzerland Team News

The Swiss national team are preparing for a home tournament after disappointing results.

They lost six of their last nine matches, which concerns Sundhage and her staff. Most worryingly, two of those defeats came at the hands of Wednesday’s opponents, Norway.

A 1-2 loss in Stavanger in February was followed by a 0-1 defeat on home ground in Sion in early June, results that give Norway a big psychological advantage.

Recent controversial headlines about a 1-7 setback in a training match against the under-15 team were dismissed by the players as irrelevant to their physical preparation. But this adds another layer of external pressure.

While a 4-1 friendly victory over the Czech Republic on June 26th provided a timely boost, it cannot mask the struggles.

The most significant blow for Switzerland is the absence of star player Ramona Bachmann. The Houston Dash forward was ruled out of the tournament with a cruciate ligament injury to her left knee. Bachmann’s creativity, experience, and goal-scoring threat are difficult to replace.

Creative and goal-scoring work will fall on Sydney Schertenleib, an 18-year-old striker. Her pace and technique could be a key weapon. Young forward Riola Xhemaili scored a goal and an assist in the 4-1 success over the Czech Republic, suggesting that the younger players are ready to step up.

Captain Lia Wälti, the key midfielder from Arsenal, had her own fitness concerns over the past year but is expected to be fit to start. She provides the crucial link between defence and attack.

However, the defensive unit remains a concern. Switzerland have failed to keep a clean sheet in six recent fixtures. The backline, led by Viola Calligaris and Luana Bühler, will need to find cohesion to stop Norway’s offensive line.

Leila Wandeler has a hip injury and remains doubtful. Lara Marti ruptured her ACL in late May during training with the national team, ruling her out of the home Euro 2025 and a further several months. Her absence leaves a gap on the left flank in Switzerland’s defensive setup.

Switzerland predicted lineup vs Norway (3-5-2): Herzog; Maritz, Calligaris, Bühler; Beney, Valotto, Wälti, Reuteler, Riesen; Schertenleib, Xhemaili.

Norway Team News

After disappointing group stage exits in the last two European Championships, a change was necessary to utilize individual talent. Gemma Grainger, who took over in early 2025, has improved the quality of Norwegian play.

While their Nations League campaign was not flawless, their only defeats were narrow ones to France. At the same time, in the Euro playoff qualification, Norway dispatched Albania and Northern Ireland with aggregate scores of 14-0 and 7-0, respectively.

Ada Hegerberg is the first-ever Ballon d’Or Féminin winner. Her return to the international fold and her appointment as captain are a monumental boost. Her leadership, combined with the world-class talents of Caroline Graham Hansen and Guro Reiten, forms one of the best attacking tridents in the tournament.

The primary tactical question for Grainger is how to best configure her midfield to support the front three. Vilde Bøe Risa, who scored the winner against the Swiss in June, is a strong candidate to start, providing a goal threat from the middle of the park.

The primary focus, however, will be on the frontline. Caroline Graham Hansen is in great form for Barcelona, and Chelsea’s Guro Reiten is one of the most creative players in the world.

With Ada Hegerberg leading the line, Norway have a front three with the perfect mix of pace, technical skill, and finishing. Their ability to interchange positions and create overloads will be the primary tactical problem for Switzerland to solve.

Norway’s only confirmed absence is experienced centre‑back Guro Bergsvand, who withdrew from the squad due to injury and is replaced by Marthine Østenstad.

Norway predicted lineup vs Switzerland (4-2-3-1): Fiskerstrand; Bjelde, Harviken, Hansen, Bradberg Lund; Engen, Bøe Risa; Reiten, Graham Hansen, Maanum; Hegerberg.

Switzerland vs Norway Prediction

  • Pick: 2X
  • Odds: 1.28 (22Bet)
  • Score prediction: Switzerland 1-2 Norway

Switzerland will be supported by a passionate home crowd, and in tournament football, that emotional wave can be a powerful force.

However, some points strongly point towards a Norwegian victory. They have already proven twice this year that they can beat a Swiss side.

The main difference lies in Gemma Grainger’s team’s attacking strength. The Swiss backline will be stretched and tested in different areas.

I think Norway’s attacking class will probably be the deciding factor.

Switzerland vs Norway Prediction, Betting Tip

  • Pick: Total Over 1.5 Goals
  • Odds: 1.25 (22Bet)

Switzerland, playing in front of an expectant home crowd, cannot afford to simply sit back and absorb pressure. They will be pushed to play on the front foot, which could leave them exposed to Norway’s counter-attacks.

The Swiss showed their own goal-scoring touch by netting four against the Czech Republic, and with young attackers keen to score, they are more than capable of contributing to the scoreline.
