Scotland’s date with destiny arrives on Thursday evening, as they could secure a second straight appearance at the EUROs with a point on the road against Spain. The hosts could keep in the hunt to top Group A with maximum points this week.
It has been a tremendous qualification campaign to this point for Scotland, and they require just one more point to reach the EUROs for the second straight edition of the tournament. Scotland currently sit top of the Group A standings after five rounds of matches, and they hold a six-point advantage over Spain.
The European nation have been in excellent form throughout this calendar year, as they have won all five matches that they have played in Group A. They have been excellent in the final third, scoring 12 goals. However, it has been their defensive play that has given them something to build on, as they have conceded just once in the group. A response will be needed this week, as they were handed a brutal reminder of how far they still have to go after being beaten 3-1 by England at Hampden Park.
There will be pressure on Spain on Thursday, as they must claim victory to remain in with a chance of topping Group A. They currently sit six points behind Scotland, but they have a game in hand over their rivals. Spain have won three of their four matches in Group A, with their only defeat coming against Scotland on the road.
They have been in excellent recent form in the group, winning each of their last two against Georgia and Cyprus. Over those matches, they have scored an incredible 13 goals, and they have allowed just one.
Spain have won six of the 14 previous counters between these nations, but they were beaten in their latest clash against Scotland in March. But, that victory for the Scots is their only win since landing a famous 3-1 success at the 1984 World Cup.
Scotland were excellent in their first match against Spain in Group A at Hampden Park. There’s little doubt that the Scots have progressed excellently under Steve Clarke, and we could see them landing a famous result in Spain on Thursday by getting the draw that they need to reach EURO 2024.
