Spain have come back on top since the appointment of Luis de la Fuente, with his team remaining undefeated since March 2024. La Roja were outclassed by Colombia (0-1). 

De la Fuente has focused on accelerating the tempo of his tactics in comparison to his predecessor, Luis Enrique. He’s bet on more explosive wingers like Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams, who were key to the Spanish EURO2024 victory.

Unlike in previous call-ups, De la Fuente called up Isco, rewarding the Betis mediapunta for his season. This adds to Spain’s extensive list of brilliant midfielders. The only surprise call-up being the inclusion of Dean Huijsen instead of Aymeric Laporte. 

Spain have, however, struggled in the Nations League quarter-finals in the double-encounter against the Netherlands. They conceded two draws and only claimed a victory in the penalty shoot-out session.

Ferrán Torres has not been selected due to injuries.

To remediate the lack of creativity, Didier Deschamps called up Lyon’s Rayan Cherki, whose playmaker role would allow him to break defences apart. Didier Deschamps has been in the process of rejuvenating his men after the retirement of Antoine Griezmann, linked to the emergence of Kylian Mbappé. 

Jules Koundé has not been selected because of an injury.

On the other hand, France have often struggled with creativity and organized defences. The injury of Koundé will force Deschamps to come up with a different plan to counter the threats of Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams, who’ll be the principal playmaking hubs.

The two sides last met at EURO2024, when Spain claimed a 2-1 victory, following goals from Dani Olmo and Lamine Yamal. Kolo Muani scored the only French goal in the ninth minute.

However, their last match-up in the Nations League dates back to 2021, which ended in a victory for France. Mbappé and Karim Benzema scored, while Mikel Oyarzabal netted Spain’s consolation goal.
