Rodri leading Spain’s challenge
On some levels this World Cup has not gone as expected for Spain. Their young star Lamine Yamal has only registered one goal and no assists. Fellow winger Nico Williams is still not fully fit and has only featured off the bench, while playmaker Pedri has also been relegated to a substitute’s role after some sub-par displays.
However, the defence has held firm and Rodri has played a key role in midfield. He has completed 92.9% of his passes, while averaging 3.1 tackles per game.
After a brilliant team display in the 2-0 semi-final victory over France, Luis de la Fuente is not set to make any changes. Midweek goalscorer Pedro Porro is expected to be fit despite a minor injury scare.
Spain predicted lineup vs Argentina (4-2-3-1): Simón; Cucurella, Laporte, Cubarsí, Porro; Rodri, Fabián; Baena, Olmo, Yamal; Oyarzabal.
Messi the inspiration as Argentina bid to defend their title
Not since Brazil in 1962 has a team successfully defended the World Cup. That could change on Sunday as Argentina go for glory in New Jersey, after two late goals secured a 2-1 comeback victory over England in the semi-finals.
Both of those strikes were created by Lionel Messi, who is having another brilliant tournament. With eight goals and four assists in seven appearances, the 39-year-old is performing at an extremely high level and he remains the main source of creativity for La Albiceleste.
Enzo Fernández and Alexis Mac Allister also played important roles as the South Americans took control of their last-four match after falling behind. They will keep their places on Sunday, but Lionel Scaloni could opt for some fresh legs, with Rodrigo De Paul potentially returning in midfield.
Argentina predicted lineup vs Spain (4-4-2): E. Martínez; Tagliafico, Lisandro Martínez, Romero, Molina; Mac Allister, Fernández, Paredes, De Paul; Álvarez, Messi.
Spain vs Argentina Prediction
- Safe Tip: Spain Double Chance (1X)
- Odds: 1.32 (22Bet)
- Correct score prediction: Spain 2-1 Argentina
- 22Bet Booking Code: FG1BE
Argentina benefitted from some questionable tactics and poor defensive play from England on Wednesday. However, they’ve not been at their best in this tournament, with no clean sheets in their past five matches. They’ve been taken to extra time by both Cabo Verde and Switzerland.
Only the brilliance of Messi has dragged them through, but they’re at a disadvantage here having had one fewer day to prepare for the final.
Spain are unbeaten in regulation time in competitive football since March 2023, which helps make 1X a Banker in New Jersey. At this World Cup, La Roja have only conceded once in seven fixtures, while they’ve reeled off six straight victories.

Much of Spain’s attacking play is geared towards creating chances for Mikel Oyarzabal, who offers value as an anytime goalscorer bet. He has netted five times in seven World Cup outings so far.
Having also averaged a goal every 74 minutes during qualifying, the Real Sociedad man thrives in his national team. He’s had 3.1 shots per game at this tournament.
