While South Sudan may have been able to earn its first-ever Olympic win against Puerto Rico, they may have a tough time penetrating the USA’s defence on the 31st. Averaging just 90 points a game so far compared to America’s 110, South Sudan’s Carlik Jones and Marial Shayok will need to put in some serious work to keep their heads above water.
Team USA is showing no signs of slowing down, with Steve Kerr even saying Jayson Tatum should lace up. However, even without Tatum, Team USA has been on a tear with crazy point differentials and a much higher pace of play than non-NBA players would be used to.
Bet hereAfter decimating Serbia in their first 2024 Summer Olympics showing, Team USA will be looking to push their momentum, especially against a weaker team like South Sudan. Having only gained independence in 2011, South Sudan hasn’t had the time to create the same level of talent as the USA, so they’re likely going to struggle. They’re outmatched in terms of shooting, defensive presence, athleticism, and basketball IQ.
However, South Sudan should still be able to put up a respectable score, especially considering how good they did in their friendly against the US on the 20th, losing by just one point. Marial Shayok in particular did quite well in that game as well, outsourcing everybody on Team USA, so he’ll likely be looking to push his mismatch again on the 31st.
Nonetheless, Team USA is still the heavy favorite going into the game – when the Americans lock-in, they’re plain scary. Whether you look at their front-court or back-court they seem almost unstoppable. Who’s going to shut down both Anthony Davis and Joel Embiid in the post?
With so much talent on Team USA’s roster, they should have no issues dominating South Sudan throughout all four quarters. Any team with LeBron James, Stephen Curry, AD, Joel Embiid, Kevin Durant, and really any top NBA players should be golden in Paris 2024, let alone having them all on the same team.
Whether it’s shooting from beyond the arch, driving to the basket, or simply transition buckets, Team USA should put on a scoring clinic. Even if South Sudan does manage to keep themselves around throughout the game, they shouldn’t be able to put a dent in America’s scoring.
That is all to say unless Steve Kerr decides to scale back their offensive schemes and not run up the score, 25 points per court is light work.
