Sevilla’s season has been challenging under García Pimienta, with the team sitting 14th out of 20 in La Liga. One of their few bright spots for this season was their Copa del Rey campaign when the team drew against Almería. Despite fielding most of his starters, Pimienta’s side suffered a shocking 4-1 defeat. Isaac Romero opened the scoring in the 5th minute, creating a false sense of security. 

Sevilla conceded four unanswered goals due to complacency. Almería played with energy, while Los Nervionenses appeared mentally absent. They’re one of the few La Liga sides eliminated, along with Real Valladolid, Las Palmas, and Mallorca.

The club promised García reinforcements this winter following the retirement of Jesús Navas and the departure of Lucas Ocampos. The primary transfer targets in this window have been Juninho and Rubén Vargas. However, financial issues threaten these deals, with Sevilla struggling to navigate the salary cap. While Juninho was initially the priority, Vargas has recently emerged as the more realistic option.

At the same time, the club has been looking to loan out Kelechi Iheanacho. He came with high expectations but became one of the greatest disappointments of the season. 

A winger remains Pimienta’s top priority. The coach must also address defensive issues, with Sevilla conceding four goals to Real Madrid just two weeks after a similar defeat to Atlético Madrid.

Valencia

In desperate need of points, Valencia faced Real Madrid with high stakes. The match, postponed due to the DANA storm, saw Vinícius Jr sent off after a heated exchange with goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski. Hugo Duro scored in the 27th minute, giving Los Che hope of securing a crucial victory. 

However, Real Madrid overturned the score in just five minutes (2-1), handing Valencia another defeat despite a strong 80-minute performance.

Los Che sit 19th in La Liga, with just two wins in 18 matches. Amid their relegation battle, the club announced RCC Construction as the contractor for ongoing projects. RCC previously handled tasks like the Espanyol RCDE Stadium, Barcelona’s Joan Gamper facilities, and Real Madrid’s Valdebebas training grounds. Work at the Mestalla has been stalled since 2009 due to Valencia’s financial difficulties.

The club face Eldense in the Copa del Rey on Tuesday, just four days before their clash with Sevilla.

Both teams are enduring one of their worst seasons in years, but Sevilla are favoured to win. The latter can rely on Isaac Romero, their lone scorer in the 4-1 loss to Almería. Valencia, in the midst of a transitional phase after sacking club legend Baraja, appear to be in disarray. 

Although Sevilla lack a winger, they benefit from more rest and relative stability. Playing at home further tilts the odds in their favour.

Considering Valencia’s poor defensive record, Romero can expect to have enough chances to land on the scoresheet.
