Bayern München remain among the leading contenders for DFB Pokal glory this term, as they bid to extend their excellent record in the competition. They face an interesting challenge in the second round on Wednesday, as they come up against FC Saarbrücken, who have defied expectations to reach this stage.
It has been a reliable start to the season for Bayern Munich, as they have impressed across all competitions to this point. However, the German giants will be looking to end their poor recent run in the competition this term, as they have exited in the second round in two of the previous three seasons. Last season, Bayern exited the DFB Pokal in the quarterfinal stage.
However, Bayern have been in excellent recent form, highlighted by their record 8-0 home success against Darmstadt in the Bundesliga last weekend. Harry Kane continued to show his best form, as the England captain bagged a hat-trick. Bayern were excellent in the first round, as Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting was among the scorers in a 4-0 away win against Preussen Munster.
FC Saarbrücken will be massive outsiders in the betting this week, as they look to reach the third round of the DFB Pokal. The German minnows currently play in the third tier, and they have never landed glory in this competition. However, they have reached the semi-final stage on four previous occasions, including most recently in 2019-20.
FC Saarbrücken currently sits 15th in 3. Liga after winning just three of their opening eleven matches in the competition this season. They also come into this match after going three without a win. Saarbrücken battled for the victory in the opening round, with Tim Civeja and Kai Brunker netting the goals in a dramatic 2-1 success against Karlsruher in early August.
This will only be a second meeting between these two sides, and it will be the first time that they have collided in a competitive fixture. Bayern landed victory in the only previous clash, landing a 5-1 friendly win in January 2007.
The odds will tell the story for this fixture, as Bayern should have far too much for their rivals in the DFB Pokal. Thomas Tuchel will make a number of changes, but we still fully expect the visitors to land a comfortable 4-0 win and progress through to the next round of the competition.
