AS Roma’s head coach defended his decision to start Lorenzo Pellegrini for the Europa League match against Eintracht Frankfurt, describing it as a double-edged sword: “He can help us in the attacks, which is our strength. But the transitions are also our Achilles’ heel”.
This week, Roma secured qualification to the next round of the Europa League with a 2-0 victory against Eintracht Frankfurt. In the League Phase, they finished with 12 points from 8 games, enough to make it to the intermediate round.
The club reportedly is looking to sign Mika Marmol, as centre-back Mario Hermoso moved to Leverkusen this winter. Las Palmas are rumoured to be asking for at least €10M for Marmol.
Roma currently rank 9th in Serie A, drawing eight and also losing eight while drawing six. They have not been defeated in Serie A since December 15th, when they suffered a 2-0 defeat against Como. Ranieri’s side struggled in the second half, conceding two goals in stoppage time.
Roma predicted lineup vs Napoli (3-5-1-1): Svilar; Ndicka, Mancini, Celik; Angeliño, Pellegrini, Koné, Pisilli, Rensch; Baldanzi; Dovbyk.
Napoli occupy first place in Serie A and are the most in-form team in the league, winning their last seven matches. Their previous two games saw victories over key rivals, Atalanta (3-2) and Juventus (2-1).
Antonio Conte’s system relies on maximising the potential of key players, such as Scott McTominay, Romelu Lukaku and Matteo Politano.
Napoli tried to sign Alejandro Garnacho (Manchester United) and Karim Adeyemi (Dortmund), but the club pulled out of the negotiations as both players were deemed too pricey for the state of the club’s finances.
Napoli started looking for cheaper alternatives and is rumoured to have shifted attention to Anderlecht forward Francis Amuzu.
Napoli sold Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to PSG this winter, forcing Antonio Conte to look for alternatives at home.
David Neres has so far replaced him on the left wing. He has two goals and six assists in Seria A this season, but he hasn’t managed to silence all his critics yet.
Napoli predicted lineup vs AS Roma (4-3-3): Meret; Leonardo Spinazzola, Juan Jesus, Rrahmani, Di Lorenzo; McTominay, Lobotka, Anguissa; Neres, Lukaku, Politano.
Bet hereNapoli currently seem unstoppable. One factor that explains their success is the pair Anguissa-McTominay; both midfielders are dangerous in the box while combining pace and technique. As the duo often feed Romelu Lukaku with chances, the absence of Khvicha hasn’t been felt yet.
Conte often sacrifices defensive solidity to create numerical superiority in the final third. Lazio was one of the few teams to keep Napoli quiet in the last months (1-0).
On the other side, Roma’s defensive frailties make it difficult for Ranieri to adopt a similar game plan.
Despite Ranieri incorporating more defensive-minded players, it is unlikely to be enough against Napoli. Scott McTominay is the player who would benefit the most, as such blocks struggle against midfielders in the box.
McTominay’s late runs into the box have troubled defenders all season, and he seems to be the most likely to find the back of the net.
