Real Madrid are still adjusting to life under Xabi Alonso, who replaced Carlo Ancelotti before the start of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. 

The new coach hasn’t adopted the 3-4-2-1 tactic that made him so successful at Leverkusen. But the squad are showing early signs of what Alonso wants, particularly in the attacking phase. They’re definitely still a work in progress.

Even if Real aren’t playing at their best yet, which isn’t surprising considering all their absences, they’ve found a way to get results. Madrid went undefeated in the group stage (W2, D1), and the 3-0 win over Salzburg on Thursday was their best performance to date. 

The attack was crisp, and the defence was solid enough to keep their first clean sheet in the tournament.

To make things even better for Real, Kylian Mbappé is back in training and might be available for this Round of 16 match. Others, like Eder Militao, David Alaba, Dani Carvajal and Endrick, remain sidelined. But Madrid’s chances of making a deep run would gain a huge boost with the return of Mbappe. He scored 42 club goals across all competitions in 2024/25.

The Serie A giants opened the tournament with an outstanding 5-0 win over Al Ain, but they didn’t look nearly as convincing in the 4-1 victory over Wydad Casablanca despite the scoreline. To make things worse, they finished the group-stage campaign with a 5-2 loss to Man City. They looked overmatched from start to finish (xG: 0.92 to City’s 3.81).

It’s hard not to focus on the 5-2 loss to Manchester, but there are some factors to consider. Manager Igor Tudor decided to tweak the lineup and rotate some pieces since Juventus were already qualified regardless of what had happened against the Citizens.

That’s not expected to be the case against Real Madrid, so The Old Lady should play a stronger side for this RO16 tilt.

The biggest issue for Juventus ahead of Tuesday will be their tactical aspects. Unless the wing-backs deploy deeper effectively, the squad will probably face Madrid’s attacking line on a 1-on-1 basis far too often. 

That should spell problems for the Serie A giants. The team need to find a way to limit the danger on their end, but their five goals conceded against City weren’t encouraging at all.

Juventus showed glimpses of quality in their wins over Al Ain and Wydad. However, their meeting with City is a reflection of their true level against top European opposition. They are bound to struggle against Real as well. 

Despite the absences, Madrid have looked extremely solid in this tournament and appear to be on the rise, whereas Juventus are trending in the wrong direction.

Real could also see the return of Mbappé, but if the Frenchman doesn’t start, his presence alone should still complicate the opposing defenders. It might end up being a tight game, as neither side will be at full strength, but Madrid are the odds-on favourites on paper. Expect them to justify that tag and secure a victory to put them in the quarterfinals.

Real Madrid will enter Tuesday’s game with a great deal of confidence following their convincing 3-0 victory over Salzburg. However, we can’t forget that they failed to keep a clean sheet against both Al Hilal and Pachuca. Juventus represent a far bigger threat than those two clubs.

Meanwhile, Juventus allowed five goals against Manchester City and have failed to keep a clean sheet in their most recent two FIFA Club World Cup matches. Given that neither side has been particularly good on the defensive end so far, it’s easy to imagine both teams finding the back of the net at least once.
