Betis is currently 7th in the La Liga standings with 15 points, achieving mixed results in recent weeks. They won against Osasuna (2-1) but lost the local derby against rivals Sevilla (0-1) and also suffered a defeat against Legia Warszawa in the Conference League (0-1).
While Betis have won a few other games, they lost against Real Madrid and Sevilla, highlighting their challenges in high-profile games.
Defensive frailties remain a major concern for Los Verdiblancos, who have conceded nine goals while only scoring ten in their ten league games.
Betis faces a critical injury crisis. Key players William Carvalho, Giovanni Lo Celso, Isco, and Marc Roca are missing, severely limiting their midfield options. Natan is suspended due to his direct red card against Osasuna and will also be absent.

Key Player to Watch | Abde |
Team Strengths | Strong cohesion in the attack and clear ideas |
Team Weaknesses | Lack of quality in the attack since Lo Celso and Isco got injured, lack of quality in the defence |
Key injuries and suspensions. | William Carvalho, Giovanni Lo Celso, Isco, Marc Roca and Natan(suspended) |
Atlético had a strong start to the season, picking up win after win, but October hasn’t been kind to Los Rojiblancos. They lost to Benfica on a disastrous night (4-0), failed to win against Real Sociedad (1-1), and fell 3-1 to LOSC in the Champions League.
The defeat against Lille probably hurts more than any other. Diego Simeone’s team dominated the match but couldn’t pull the trigger. With back-to-back Champions League losses to Benfica and Lille, Atlético now find themselves at the bottom of the Champions League standings, adding significant pressure to their remaining fixtures.
Los Rojiblancos only won once this month, against Léganes (3-1), and things won’t get any easier with injuries and suspensions continuing to plague Simeone’s squad. Key players like Le Normand and Marcos Llorente will be sidelined for the upcoming match, while Barrios and Azpilicueta remain doubtful.

Key Player to Watch | Alexander Sorloth |
Team Strengths | High-quality forwards, established build-up channels, strony wing-backs. |
Team Weaknesses | Lack of adaptation of Julian Alvarez, lack of balance in the midfield without Pablo Barrios. |
Key injuries and suspensions. | Lenglet, Le Normand, Marcos Llorente, Pablo Barrios(doubtful), Azpilicueta (doubtful) |
The two teams have a rich history, having faced each other 54 games times. Atlético have dominated the encounter with 27 victories, while Betis won 12 times. They also share fifteen draws. Atlético won the last match in Spring 2024 (2-1), with the help of Alvaro Morata and an own goal by Rui Silva. Carvalho scored the consolation goal for Betis.
The last Betis victory was in 2019, a 1-0 victory, in which Sergio Canales scored the only goal from the penalty spot.
My two picks for Betis would have been Giovanni Lo Celso and Isco, but both players are injured. Even William Carvalho would have been an option, but he’s also injured.
This doesn’t leave me with many options, and it’s balanced between Abde and Pablo Fornals. One could argue that Rui Silva deserves to be named – but as a goalkeeper, it’s hard to mention him as the player to watch.
Abde is well-positioned to exploit Atlético’s vulnerability on the flanks. Their single wing-back system often leaves space for fast counters, a situation Abde can exploit with his speed. Abde is a powerful winger, and despite not being a prolific scorer, his pace makes him a difficult winger to deal with in transitions.
For Atlético, the standout pick is Sorloth, given Betis’ underwhelming center-back pairing. Sorloth regularly finds himself in advantageous positions, which allows him to shoot more often than most strikers.
The other obvious mention is Antoine Griezmann, who shines against opponents with weak defences. He runs more than anyone else which makes him a constant threat.
Bet hereAtlético often struggles to make an impact away from home, and Julian Alvarez’s adaptation hasn’t been as smooth as expected. Atlético will rely on counterattacks led by Rodrigo Riquelme and Samuel Lino, using their pace to break through Betis’ defence.
Gallagher’s role is essential as he becomes a fourth attacker with his delayed runs in the penalty box. However, this has been less frequent recently, as Pablo Barrios’s absence forced Diego Simeone to change his tactical plans.
For Betis, things are more complicated in the offence. Abde often finds the break but lacks the vision to connect with his teammates while his teammate Pablo Fornals is still inconsistent. Still, Pellegrini should try to target Javi Galan’s lack of involvement in the defence.
The void left in Betis’s attack is no joke. The team was highly dependent on Isco, and the second most important player was Lo Celso. As the playmaker, he initiated the majority of the transitions, with most of the play centered around him.
There isn’t anyone who can currently fill this role. Sure, there are players like Abde (who scored the opener against Copenhagen), but it’s different as the movement doesn’t come through the centre.
For Atlético, the key issue is finding a solution for Julián Alvarez’s adaptation, which has so far been underwhelming for a €90M transfer. He seems to clash with Antoine Griezmann, as they tend to occupy similar zones. Fielding him in a three-forward system, as attempted in their last match, has not worked out well.
Alexander Sorloth struggles in front of goal despite frequently landing in promising positions. His involvement in the game is a net positive, as it indicates he’s often in the right place, but his finishing needs some adjustment.
Sorloth needs a confidence boost, and there is no better medicine than a defensively insecure opponent like Betis. Much will depend on how he’s set up.
Sorloth isn’t the most technical striker, but with Antoine Griezmann and Conor Gallagher as his supporting teammates, he can receive the assistance he needs to thrive and find the back of the net.
