Puerto Rico has had a rough time so far in the 2024 Olympics, dropping their first two games against South Sudan and Serbia – losing to the latter 66-107. Due to their lack of consistent shooting, and drought of real NBA talent, Puerto Rico is going to struggle a ton against Team USA.
Joseph Alvarado would have to play his absolute heart out and then some to even make the game close, but considering the New Orleans Pelican is an average NBA player at best, that’s a tall ask.
It’s really starting to look like another Team USA sweep going into the gold medal game, as nobody has the talent to compete with America. Moreover, Team USA managed to bury South Sudan 103-86 after they beat Puerto Rico 90-79.
As long as nothing crazy happens, America has a great shot at just cruising through this game.
Bet herePuerto Rico is really looking down the barrel going into Saturday’s game against Team USA. The national squad itself is on the weaker end, even when compared with similar-sized nations, and outside of Joseph Alvarado, there is no real recognizable talent anywhere on the roster.
Team USA should be able to dominate the pace of play throughout all four quarters with some of the best shooters, slashers, and defenders in the world. There’s a crazy mismatch for every single player on Team USA; Stephen Curry will light you up from three, LeBron James will still bully the rim in his old age, and Joel Embiid is just too big for anyone to really slow down.
The real question going into the game is whether or not coach Steve Kerr decides to run up the score. Because if Kerr lets the guys play as they wish, a point differential in the 60s could be a real possibility.
It’s just hard to imagine G-league players like Davon Reed and washed-up NBA has-beens like Tremont Waters pulling out a dub.
While Puerto Rico may be like a toddler stepping into the ring with Mike Tyson, that doesn’t mean nobody will have a show-out performance. Alvarado, in particular, should have quite a great game, considering his usage rate will most likely be through the roof throughout all four quarters.
Alvarado may be an average player for the New Orleans Pelicans, averaging just 7.1 ppg during the 2023-2024 NBA season, but if he’s given keys to an entire offense he is bound to put up some decent numbers. So far in the Olympics, he’s managed to average 16 points, but against Team USA, his usage rate should be much higher than usual, pushing his stats passed their norm.
If everybody else is getting clamped up both down low and beyond the arch, dumping the ball to Alvarado may become the default. The guy’s a decent three-point shooter, sitting at 37.7% throughout the 23-24 NBA season, so if all else fails, he may just start chucking threes.
