Portugal’s U21 side have often raised the question as to why they could never win a Euro trophy in their history, despite regularly fielding future stars. As is often the case, the coach depends on decisions taken at a senior level. 

However, it came to the general surprise that Sporting winger Geovany Quenda was not selected for the senior squad, despite featuring with the first team in recent months.

Samuel Soares is the other “senior” player who has remained with the U21s, even though he played with Benfica. Management prefer him to play in the youth national level tournament instead of featuring at the Club World Cup, held at the same time as the Under-21s EURO in Slovakia. Portugal can also rely on the services of Fábio Silva up front.

The Portuguese team qualified for the EURO and finished in pole position of Group G, only losing one game in ten. They boasted the best attacking and defensive stats. The squad scored 33 goals and only conceded six.
