The penultimate weekend of Premier League action in 2023-24 gets underway on Saturday. Newcastle will be looking to put pressure on the top five, while Brighton will be chasing a second straight victory to enhance their chances of a top-half finish this term.
It has been a solid end to the season for Newcastle United. The Magpies will be looking to maintain their excellent recent run of form, which could assure them of a place in Europe next term. They come into this round of matches sitting sixth, but they could potentially finish fifth if they are able to pick up victories in their final three matches this term.
The Magpies come into this round of matches after winning each of their last two and four of their last five. Newcastle were in excellent form in their previous fixture in the Premier League after registering a handsome 4-1 victory at Burnley. Alexander Isak continued his excellent scoring campaign by netting the fourth, while other efforts were added by Bruno Guimaraes and Callum Wilson.
It hasn’t been the most straightforward season for Brighton this term, as the Seagulls have failed to kick on following an impressive 2022-23 campaign. They come into this weekend of matches sitting in the bottom half of the standings, but they could potentially end the round in ninth with a victory.
Brighton ended a run of three defeats in four matches in their previous outing, as they battled well to record a 1-0 home success against Champions League-chasing Aston Villa. Their winning effort in that success was netted with just three minutes remaining by Joao Pedro.
Brighton picked up a 3-1 success in the reverse clash between these sides in September. That victory ended a four-game winless run against the Magpies, with Newcastle recording two victories over that period. Both of those wins were recorded in home matches. Meanwhile, Brighton’s only win in their last four visits to St. James’ Park was achieved in September 2020.
Brighton gained confidence with an impressive home win over Aston Villa last weekend, but their poor record on the road against Newcastle would be a concern ahead of this showdown. Therefore, we will be taking a chance on the Magpies recording maximum points on Saturday.
