Napoli’s narrow 1-0 victory away to Monza last weekend, carved out by a towering Scott McTominay header, kept Antonio Conte’s side level with Inter on 71 points and preserved their momentum.
The win followed a 3-0 demolition of Empoli at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, again powered by a McTominay brace and Romelu Lukaku’s thumping finish. Before that, a 1-1 draw at Bologna stalled their chase. André-Frank Zambo Anguissa’s goal was cancelled out by Dan Ndoye’s audacious back-heel.
In terms of tactics, Politano and Spinazzola hold the width to prevent opponents doubling up on Lukaku. When the full-backs overlap, they invert and attack the half-spaces. Against Empoli, both wingers hugged the chalk, pinning the back four and opening central lanes for McTominay’s late-box runs. The Scot scored from one and crashed the post from another.
The same pattern forced Monza’s low block to tilt. Lukaku’s decoy run dragged a centre-back, creating room for Raspadori’s cross to McTominay.
Out of possession, Napoli press in a 4-1-4-1 spearheaded by Lukaku. McTominay steps onto the opposition holder, while Anguissa shadows lateral passes. The trap was obvious versus Bologna.
Once the ball travelled wide, Olivera leapt high and the near winger sprint-pressed, funnelling play into Di Lorenzo’s tackle channel. Bologna survived, but the blueprint remains.
Conte confirmed in Tuesday’s media briefing that Neres “ends his league season”.
Juan Jesus (hamstring) and back-up keeper Nikita Contini are out. On the plus side, André-Frank Anguissa returned as a late substitute in Monza and is set to start at the base of midfield, giving Billy Gilmour a breather.
Napoli predicted lineup vs Torino (4-3-3): Meret; Di Lorenzo, Rrahmani, Marin, Olivera; Anguissa, Lobotka, Politano; McTominay, Spinazzola, Lukaku.
Torino arrive in Campania fresh from a morale-boosting 2-0 victory over Udinese on Wednesday. It was sealed by Ché Adams’ ninth league goal and a late Ali Dembélé strike. The result snapped a three-game winless spell, which had included the 1-0 slip-up at Como.
Prior to Como, the Granata emerged from the Olimpico with a 1-1 draw against Lazio. Gvidas Gineitis rifled home a late equaliser and underlined the midfield dynamism Vanoli now demands.
Vanoli’s Torino have shown versatility in their formations, switching between 4-2-3-1 and 4-4-2 to adapt to different challenges. Their emphasis on a solid defensive base, combined with quick transitions, has been effective against multiple opponents.
The midfield duo of Ricci and Casadei offers a blend of defensive solidity and creative distribution. The attacking midfielders provide support to the lone striker. However, the absence of Zapata has necessitated a reevaluation of their attacking strategies, with a greater emphasis on collective movement and exploiting spaces.
Vanoli explained last week that Sebastián Sosa will be away due to illness, while Adams is battling an adductor strain and will face a late fitness test. Meanwhile, centre-half Sebastian Walukiewicz is back, giving Toro a more natural ball-playing option alongside Guillermo Maripán.
Torino predicted lineup vs Napoli (3-4-2-1): Milinkovic-Savic; Walukiewicz, Maripan, Masina; Biraghi, Ricci, Casade, Karamoh; Ginetis, Elmas; Adams.
Bet hereOn underlying numbers, Napoli average 1.90 expected goals per game (xG) and allow 0.97. Torino create just 1.11 and concede 1.38.
The hosts fire 12.0 shots per match with 42 % of attacks down the right flank. It’s exactly where the visitors concede most set-pieces after Bellanova’s forays push the back line into recovery clearances.
With five games left, Napoli are level on 71 points with Inter and could yet force the league’s first Scudetto play-off in 60 years. Conte publicly framed Sunday as “non-negotiable” in that pursuit.
Torino sit mid-table, eight points off the final European spot. Vanoli admitted the environment in Naples “will be fiery” but insisted his team are “still growing,” a tacit acknowledgement of differing stakes.
Antonio Conte’s side average 6.4 corners at home and funnel 42 % of attacks down Di Lorenzo’s flank.
Torino concede the fourth-most set-pieces from open play because Bellanova’s advanced positioning forces emergency recoveries. With wingers drifting inside, Spinazzola and Di Lorenzo should enjoy repeated two-v-one overloads, translating territorial supremacy into at least six flags.
