Monza is one of the newcomers aiming to solidify their status in the Italian top flight. They finished mid-table at the end of the 2023/24 season – a more than respectable result.
This fixture will be particularly exciting for one player, Stefano Sensi, who just signed for Monza from Inter Milan – their opponent in this match. Homecomings are always fun, and Sensi’s arrival will also help to address Monza’s creativity issues.
Daniele Maldini (from AC Milan) is the other ex-Milan addition to the squad, who was signed to strengthen Monza’s shaky backline. Needless to say, the two players are expected to be the most important signings of the campaign as Monza is looking to build on last season’s success.
The start of the 2024/25 campaign has been tough for Monza, as they are still winless after three matches. A goalless draw at Empoli in the opener of the season was followed by a defeat (0-1) against Genoa at home. The last game saw Monza drop three points against Fiorentina.
Playing against a title contender like Inter Milan is never ideal when in poor form, and Monza must rise to the occasion to avoid further struggles.
Inter Milan, reigning champions of the 2023/2024 Serie A campaign, are determined to defend their title with a solid start to the season. Despite a relatively calm transfer window, it doesn’t look like Inter Milan is planning on giving the trophy away.
Only six sides remain undefeated in Serie A – Inter Milan, Juventus, Torino, Udinese, Empoli and Fiorentina. Inter’s first game might have seen a draw against Genoa (2-2), but Inter Milan improved their form, crashing Lecce (2-0) and drifting past Atalanta (4-0). With the highest goal difference, Inter Milan remains at the top of the table.
It also means that Inter Milan has not conceded a single goal since the fixture against Genoa. Inter will need that type of confidence, as the Monza game is the last one before an epic re-match – Inter Milan vs Manchester City in the Champions League. The two teams already met in the final not so long ago, and the Italians are still bitter about it.
This upcoming fixture could allow players like Kristjan Asllani, Marko Arnautović, and Mehdi Taremi to gain minutes and prove their worth, particularly against a struggling Monza side.
Bet hereWhile Monza may think it is now the time to gear up and consolidate themselves, the fixture against Inter Milan might prove to be the contrary. The North Italians have shown no remorse or willingness to slow down after just bulldozed Atalanta (4-0).
Monza, a team that struggled to remain consistent last season, might have to play their best game to snatch points away from the defending champions. Indeed, they performed well against giants, but that was when they were warmed up – which they currently aren’t.
Monza is the weakest type of team for Inter – those that are uncertain defensively while also struggling with an identity up front.
This could also be the time for the champions to field players who were rested during their last game – such as Denzel Dumfries, Stefan De Vrij and Piotr Zieliński.
The latter came from Napoli and replaced Stefano Sensi – who transferred to Monza. He is expected to be one of the creative sparks of the team, as he was for Napoli for years.
In this type of game, whoever partners with Lautaro Martinez will see the Argentinian’s brilliance in the box. Martinez regularly ends the season with double digits. Against Monza, especially with the inclusion of their recruits, Lautaro’s runs between the defenders will be key for Inter Milan to dismantle Monza’s defensive structure.
Though Martinez played a quieter role in the match against Atalanta – he wasn’t the main character against Atalanta (which was Thuram) – and the international break wasn’t particularly impressive either. However, Monza should now be his next victim, independently of his partner.
What’s even more important to consider is that Martinez is entering his prime years, at twenty-seven years of age: Monza might just be the first victim of many. He might not be the most outstanding physically, but his finishing expertise takes advantage of any mistakes on the defensive end – and Monza is a culprit of those.
