Marseille will be back in league action this weekend, as they bid to get their campaign back on track. However, the increased pressure will likely be on Lens, who remain within touching distance of a European place at this late stage of the season.
It has been a challenging campaign domestically for Marseille, with many of their bright moments throughout 2023-24 coming in the Europa League. The European competition could yet prove to be their route back into a major competition next term, as they are within three victories of booking a spot in the Champions League.
However, their league form throughout this season has been extremely poor after losing nine of their 29 matches, and claiming just ten victories. They come into this week of matches after losing three of their last four, and failing to land a victory over that period of fixtures. But, their home form remains consistent after losing just once in 13 matches at the Stade Velodrome.
Lens enjoyed an excellent campaign last term after finishing second in the standings, but they face an uphill challenge to secure a European berth this term. The French side currently sits sixth in the standings, but they enjoyed an important return to form last weekend after ending a four-game winless sequence.
Their most recent success was picked up at home against Clermont Foot, but they have failed to score more than once in a Ligue 1 fixture since a 3-0 win over Lyon in early March. Despite that, a victory this weekend would see them move up to fifth in the standings. But, a defeat could leave their European dreams shattered.
Lens have an excellent recent record against Marseille after winning four of their last five league fixtures against their rivals. That includes wins in each of the last three showdowns between the sides in Ligue 1. Marseille’s only success in their last seven matches against Lens was achieved away from home in January 2022.
The recent meetings between these sides are very interesting to study. Lens have won on each of their last three visits to Marseille, and more success could arrive this weekend. We will be siding with the visitors landing maximum points to keep their hopes of a European finish alive.
