Manchester City

Manchester City’s season, marked by Rodri’s injury, continues to face challenges. Although the team found its way back to winning ways, it continued to worry supporters and analysts. 

The Citizens defeated Leicester (2-0) and West Ham (4-1) in closely contested matches, with both teams creating chances. The most important question concerns the defence, as Manchester can’t seem to stop simple counter-attacks. 

Head coach Pep Guardiola has been critical of his team’s performance despite the 4-1 victory, insisting his team needs to improve: “There were glimpses of brilliance. The work ethic was unbelievable, but still not the composure. We still accelerate everything”.

They currently rank 6th in the Premier League with 34 points in 20 matches. 

The club has been linked with forward Omar Marmoush, who has scored 18 goals this season, and Atalanta midfielder Éderson. However, as both teams are involved in title races, striking a deal before summer for either player seems unlikely. 

Midfielder Kevin de Bruyne has been linked with a move to the MLS, but the Belgian hasn’t commented on the rumours.

Éderson, Rúben Dias, Rodri, Claudio Echeverri and Oscar Bobb remain sidelined.

Salford City

Salford City currently rank third in League Two, undefeated in the last six matches. They were scheduled to face Chesterfield in January, but the match was postponed due to their Manchester clash in the FA Cup. 

In early November, Shrewsbury was defeated by Salford in the first round of the FA Cup. Matthew Lund scored a brace for the winners, while John Marquis scored for the opponents.

Salford were paired with Cheltenham in the second round of the FA Cup. It ended in their 2-0 victory thanks to Francis Okoronkwo’s goal and Cole Stockton’s converted penalty. The team were last defeated by 14th-placed Gillingham in League Two in early December (1-0). This is also the team’s last goal conceded, with six consecutive clean sheets since. 

Before the defeat against Gillingham, Salford’s last loss was back in early November. It was a shocking loss of 1-0 to last-placed Carlisle. The goal was conceded in the 88th minute.

Sunderland-loaned goalkeeper Matty Young is liked by Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola according to The Sun. 

Daniel Chesters remains sidelined.

Manchester are expected to win and progress against Salford, especially considering they’ll host the match at the Etihad.
