The current league leaders in the Bundesliga will be back in action on Sunday, as Bayer Leverkusen go in search of a third straight win. FC Köln will be the visitors, as they continue to look for their first victory of the 2023-24 season.
A lot of confidence would have been taken from the start to the season that Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen have made this term. They currently sit at the top of the standings at this early stage, as they have won five of their opening six matches in the competition. Furthermore, they are one of just three teams that are yet to suffer a defeat in the Bundesliga this season.
Leverkusen have been in excellent recent form, and they will be chasing a third straight victory to stay top of the league table this weekend. Alonso’s side were in excellent form last weekend, as they landed a comfortable 3-0 win on the road against Mainz. Alex Grimaldo and Jonas Hofmann scored the second half efforts in that excellent victory.
There has been very little to get excited about for FC Köln fans so far this term, as they currently sit second bottom in the league standings after six rounds of matches. They are one of three teams that are still looking for their first victory of the 2023-24 season, and they have picked up just a single point from their opening six fixtures.
Köln’s fortunes haven’t looked like improving in recent weeks, as they come into this match after losing for the third game running last weekend. Their most recent defeat was inflicted in front of their home fans, as Stuttgart eventually secured a 2-0 win. However, Köln’s performance in that defeat was much more encouraging.
Köln picked up a second victory in three matches against Leverkusen in the most recent clash between the sides. Interestingly, both of their wins over that period were secured at BayArena. Leverkusen’s last home win against Köln was picked up with a 3-0 success in April 2021.
Köln have enjoyed their recent visits to Leverkusen, and that is interesting ahead of this fixture. However, it’s hard to overlook Leverkusen’s start to the season, meaning that the preference remains for the hosts to reaffirm their advantage at the top of the standings.
