As one of the few remaining sides in the Serie A who still pay a lot of emphasis on passing the ball and building defensive solidity before pressing forward, Lazio have a task on their hands when they meet Bodø/Glimt on Thursday.
The second leg of the quarterfinal of the UEFA Europa League will bring a lot of added pressure to both teams.
Lazio will feel fortunate that they are playing this fixture at home as opposed to away, where their supporters would not have been able to make much of a point.
Still, injuries to young Arijon Ibrahimović, Nuno Tavares and Patric will make things challenging for Lazio in this game, with the trio suffering from muscle and ankle injuries, respectively.
However, Lazio, who like to build from the back, will know that they cannot allow these minor setbacks to force them towards oblivion, and they will be keen on making the most of any lapses that their opponents make in this game.
In the final third, Lazio’s attackers have almost always resorted to making use of space and creating areas from where they can shoot, and the same will be on display here as well.
The role played by former Arsenal midfielder Mattéo Guendouzi will be critical in winning second balls and playing through the lines.
Lazio predicted lineup vs Bodø/Glimt (4-2-3-1): Mandas; Marusic, Gila, Romagnoli, Hysaj; Vecino, Guendouzi; Isaksen, Pedro, Zaccagni; Dia.
For Bodø/Glimt, the biggest challenge in this game – after the raucous nature of Lazio’s supporters – will be to keep a tab on their opponents’ flawless passing skills.
One of the reasons that Bodø may be able to succeed in this game will be due to their higher efficiency in the midfield.
If their defensive midfielders are able to protect the ball when they have it and intercept their opponents when they lose it, this game will be balanced.
Another way in which Bodø can challenge their opponents is by inverting their wingers and allowing at least one of them to overload a side.
This will, in turn, allow their fullbacks to create overlaps in the final third and in turn, serve their attackers with dangerous lobbed balls or crosses inside the box.
While this may give numerical advantage for the time being, Bodø need to be aware of the lapses this might create at the back.
Hence, they need to maintain their shape whenever they see their midfielders or attackers losing the ball and Lazio’s attackers coming up in numbers.
Bodø/Glimt predicted lineup vs Lazio (4-3-3): Haikin; Sjøvold, Gundersen, Bjørtuft, Bjørkan; Evjen, Berg, Saltnes; Blomberg, Høgh, Hauge.
Bet hereLazio vs Bodø/Glimt Prediction
Lazio will have a clear upper hand in this game and we expect them to win and qualify for the semifinal of the Europa League.
They have a much stronger attacking unit at their disposal in this game, and will prove to be too tough to handle for the Bodødefenders.
It will be interesting to see how the visiting side’s defenders fare in this game as they are not known to resist teams with such highly accurate passing and shooting abilities as the ones possessed by Lazio.
Bodø, who made their way into the quarterfinals of the Europa League by beating FC Twente and Olympiakos in the previous rounds, will focus a lot on keeping the loss of margin as low as possible in this game.
Having reached the quarterfinal of a European competition for just the second time, after their run in the 2021-22 Conference League, it appears as if Bodø’s dream might end here.
However, Lazio have just too much of firepower in their ranks, and it will be quite a challenge for Bodø to come to grips with that.
The only way in which Bodø can fight back is if their midfielders recycle the ball well and feed their attackers; in any case, we expect to see a total over two goals in this match.
